Ruler Now Believes
Gomez Is Traitor*
to Him.
BERLIN, D«o. 18.—News from Vene
tuela is of such a nature today that It
caused President Castro to foam with
i»ie.
He now believes Acting President
Gomes is guilty of treachery, and as a
consequence he Is In a furious temper.
For more than forty hours he has shut
himself within his princely apartments
and attempted to drown his troubles In
feasting and drinking.
All attempts to see him by newspaper
men are unavailing, but German diplo
mats say that Castro realises that his
rule In Venezuela Is at an end.
WASHINGTON BELIEVES
CASTRO RULE AT END
WASHINGTON, Dec. 18,--There Is
lively Interest both in administration
and political circles here In the rapidly
shifting situation In Venezuela. Addi
tional Information has come from Ven
eauela. sometimes direct and sometimes
l.- way of Bogota or the Dutch port of
V lllemstadt. setting forth the swift In
crease of the revolutionary strength. It
Is evident In view of the news of Wed:
needay night and yesterday that the
remains of the abandoned Castro gov
ernment are already tottering to their
fall and the general expectation Is that
a new government will be In power
within a,very short time.
The revolution has been cleverly pre
pared and seems to have ample finan
cial support. There Is the best of rea
son for saying that this government
will not put Itself to any extraordinary
trouble to prevent filibustering expedi
tions from leaving United States ports.
While It is not believed here that the
Dutch government has any Intention of
carrying on an active campaign against
Venezuela, the progress of events will
be Interesting. For the present, at
least, the Dutch government seems to
be content with making reprisals
against Venezuelan merchant and naval
vessels.
