CONFEDERATE VETERAN
DIES AT COLUMBUS
COLUMBU8, Ga„ Dae. 22.—The fu
neral of T. P. Young, which was held
here Sunday, was very largely attended.
He Was a gallant soldier In the Con
federate war. He waa born January 25,.
1148; enlisted in Company D, Captain
R. P. Pardy, of Muscogee county, Thlr-
ty-flrat Georgia regiment, volunteers,
October 4, 1881; was captured at Ap-
pomatox, Va.. May 13, 1864; carried
to Fort Delaware. Paroled Mjrch 10,
1865. During the war he served under
Generals A. R. Lawton. John B. Gordon,
Clement A. Evans, Jub A. Early, and a
niomber 6f Jackson’s corps, army of
northern Virginia. Was wounded on
the 18th of December, 1863, and after-
wnrds rejolned the ranks.

COLUMBU8, Ga„ Dee., 22.—Twenty
more near-beer dealers have taken out
the license required by the state and It
!s believed that all who nre engaged In
the business here will continue In It. It
was at first thought that the so-called
high license would close up some of
these places, but they are all doing such
a rush of business that none have
stopped so far. as thirty-live of the
dealers have so far taken out the li
cense.
ESCAPED CONVICT
CAUGHT IN ALABAMA
COLUMBU8, Ga., Dee. 22.—Ernest
Harper, a negro who was serving a
four yearn’ sentence on the county
chalngang for car breaking here, and
eacaped a week before his time was
out. was captured at Sylacauga, Ala.,
for the came offense Saturday, and will
be brought back here to serve out his
time, when he will be turned over to
the Alabama authorities for trial In
that state.
"We do not wleh any arbitration of
our church affairs.” aald Rev. Robert H.
Lamkin Tuesday morning. "We are
very well pleased and expect to build
a new church next spring. No, the fnc.
tlon did not leave the church becauee
they disliked me. I resigned and .then
a majority of the, members went with
me. Those who opposed me are still In
the old church.”
The statement followed a movement
before the Baptist Ministers’ Associa
tion Monday to appoint a committee to
arbitrate the differences said to exist
In the East End Baptist church. Nearly
fifty members had withdrawn, It was
s ited, and. were establishing the new
..ast Lake church, and the twenty or
more who remained asked the general
body to bring about a reconciliation,
e “There hare been differences In the
congregation for a long time,” said Mr.
Lamkin, the former pastor of the East
End church. "A short time ago, under
this condition, I tendered my reslgna-
' tlon. A large majority left the church
' at the same time and asked me to be
come pastor of a new church, nnd I ac
cepted. We ard now meeting In i
dwelling and expect to build a new
East Lake church In the spring or sum
mer.”
Mr. Lamkin la a young man, formerly
connected with the mission work of the
Second Baptist church. He was or'
dalned at that church, and was for a
time pastor of the Mobley Park Bap
tist church at Rome, Ga. He prefers
not to discuss the causes which brought
about the dissension In the congrega
tion beyond Baying the faction still re-
nmlnlng opposed any- new Ideas, the
organisation of church societies and
other forward steps.

MESSINA, Italy. Dec. 22.—Earth
quake shocks last night were so severe
ns to frighten many city residents Into
the open country. In addition to the
earthquakes. Mount Aetna Is causing
fear by the emission of much lava. Loud
rumbling noises are heard In the Inte
rior of the burning mountain. Huge
clouds of smoke hang over the moun
tain' top:

sioners of roads and revenues In Lau
rens county, where now there are five.
The terms of office of three commls-

E. E. Hicks retires from the office of
sheriff and will be succeeded by J. J.
Flanders; formerly deputy sheriff of the
city court. Judge J. 1* Burch and Hon.
M. S. Jones succeed Captain L. A. Mat
thews and Hon. D. J. Clark as members
of the legislature and S. T. Cordell will
be the new coroner.
