(Copyright by the International News Service, 1911.)
There Is a law In nature called the
law of diminishing returns. This law
applies to gll of our acts and deeds In
life.
It Is the simple proposition that
everything Is good in Its time and place
and up to a certain eatent; and then,
having reached Its limit, its effective
ness begins to wane and a diminished
return follows.
Kept on long enough, this thing
which was once good becomes positive
ly harmful.
For Instance, food le neceeeary to life
but too much food will certainly kill
you. Oliver Wendell Holmes had the
Idea when he said, “Because I like a
pinch of salt In my soup Is no reason
why 1 want to be Immersed In brine.',"
Religion Is good In Its time and place
but rentered upon to the exclusion of
work It may unseat reason and reduce
the man to utter helpleasnesa by di
verting hie time and attention from thla
world to another.
Exercise Is necessary to a happy and
healthful condition In life, but exerclaa
continued beyond the pivotal point will
destroy the individual- Most athletes
die young, and this Is because they
have continued their exercise so far
that It gives a diminished return and
finally an evil effect Athletes get mus
cle-bound and their old age Is full of
rheumatism and woe, provided they
have an old age. which very few do.
A man la only os strong as his heart
Is. The heart le the organ that pumps
blood to every part of the anatomy, and
If the anatomy Is so well developed that
the heart can not keep pace and feed It.
dlaease Is going to set In somewhere.
And very often the heart of tha athlete
gets tired early In the game.
A man’s vitality Is Tike power In a
factory. The power dose not lie In the
pulleys and bslt. It 1s down In the en
gine house.
. Thinking le the most hygienic, happy
and healthful thing In life used In right
proportion, but continued to the ex
clusion of physical exercise, the mind
will reel and reason stagger.
We see a good example of diminish
ing returns In the prise fighter who
works hie way up from small begin
nings, giving the sedative to all adver
saries, until the world calls him “cham.
R lon." Not content to retire then on
Is laurels, ths rule Is that In a year or
two he Is taunted by hts vanity and the
world to a point where pride gets the
better of discretion, and he endeavors
to do It all over again. The result Is
that he goes down to defeat.
Sullivan, Corbett. FI Is slmmons, Jef
fries, all In their turn went down the
long road that so many successful men
In eveiv line of human endeavor have
trod. They reached ihe pivotal point
where diminishing returns began and
could not come back.
Just now we see an example of Ihe
diminishing return In the cose of ex-
King Kasooks.
Three years ago he was undoubtedly
the most popular man lu America. But
tbe present lack of Interest shown In
the Lookoudt editorials reveals to us
where the men now stands. No one le
Interested In his utterances, even as a
matter of curiosity. The crowd that at
tends him when he appears In public Is
a tatterdemalion gang of exactly the
same kind and quality that stands In
front of a window where a man Is doing
curious stunts with neckties, rasore
and other things that seem to require
publicity.
King kalsooks reached the pivotal
point, the pinnacle of success. He then
should have retired from public view,
or else taken up a line of work totally
different from that In which he had
been engaged.
Instead of this he kept on saying the
same old things In the same old way.
Hie scream Tor civic righteousness be
came Intolerable.
Civic ‘righteousness Is beautiful, but
you don’t get It by pounding on the
table, growing red In the face and yell
ing for a welter to fetch It.
Kasooks has been trying to come
back, but he Is out of the game In the
same pitiful way that Jeffries was at
Reno.
The name of King Kasooks among
men of intelligence Is now merely a
pleasantry.
Kaxoolam stands for fifteenth cen
tury politics We have had enough of
the strong man, enough of the fighter,
enough of dogmatic Oliver Cromwell
methods.
Ex-King Kasooks Is not an econo
mist. not a lawyer, not a business men,
not a writer and not an orator. To
push a pen le not to be a writer. To
howl from the rear end of a Pullman
car Is not orator)'; and no attempt at
eloquence which this man ever made
was eo successful In arousing the popu
lace as when, mounted on a klyuse at
Cheyenne, he rode furiously aroun<$ the
race track, waving his Stetson and
emitting cowboy yells
Kasoolsm reached the pivotal point
and now Is going down hill, and going
down fast. The law of diminishing rev
turns caught It. v
Ex-King Kasooks Is now chairman of
the Down-and-Out club, which was or
ganised when the Ananias club woe or
dered to dissolve. Let us alt take hears
LORO KITCHENER, OF KHARTOUM

Woman Farm Laborers
From The Boston Globe.
One of the early morning sights In
Boston la the email army of women
farm laborers starting out for their
day's work on the truck farms or gar
dens In the suburbs. They start early,
they return late, but their season Is
short.
The sight of women working In the
fields has come to be eo common In the
garden farming districts as to attract
no special attention. Almost all of these
women are Italians, the very picture
of health, short and sturdy, straight
backed and straight limbed, and they
can handle a hoe or even a fork or
spade with as much dexterity and ef
fectiveness as the average man.
But when It comes to weeding these
women seem to be In a elas all by
themselves. It Is a picturesque sight
to watch at a distance a group of these
weedere at work. One thing the Ital
ian won't do. She won't lay aside her
bright colored finery. It seems as nec
essary to her happiness when she Is
on her knees weeding onions or break
ing her back crushing potato bugs as It
Is when she Is gossiping on her house-
stoop or celebrating a holiday.
W. 8. Gilbert.
From The Saturday Review.
Sir W. S. Gilbert's place In literature
le not the moat Interesting question
that many other people will ask them
selves about him. it Is rather what
would their memories, since they came
to manhood and womanhood, have been
If there had been no “Bab Ballads;" If
''Pinafore,” ''Patience/' "lolanthe"
and "The Pirate* of Penzance” had
never been produced; If there had been
no Savoy operas? Was Gilbert a poet
or Sullivan a musician, as the cog
noscenti understand It, la unimportant
to those, and they are not necessarily
without refinement and culture, who for
a quarter of a century found In Gilbert
and Sullivan their most charming
amusement and feel themselves now-
dowered by them with their moat
treasured reminiscences. Gilbert Is one
of those rare authors whose various
works are stages of one's own life. To
be this for one's contemporaries seems
better than any amount of posthumous
fame.
From The Red Hen.
Johnny—Papa, would you bo glad If
I saved a dollar for you?
Papa—Certainly, my son.
Johnny—Well, I saved It for you. all
right. You said If I brought a first-
class report from my teacher thla week
you would glvo mo a dollar, and I
didn’t bring It.
The
Evening
Newspaper
A canvass of 135 depart
ment store* in cities of more
than 75,000 population elic
ited from 102 the unequivo
cal opinion that the evening
newspaper is a better adver
tising medium than the news
paper published in the morn
ing. The reason is plain to
sec.
Six days of every week
the morning paper is read
by people on their way to
their offices, and either left
in the street car or tossed
to one Bide in the office.
The evening paper is car
ried home. The family reads
it. Its contents are likely
to be the subect of dinner-
table discussion. When her
day’s household labor is
ended, the wife sits down
with the evening paper to
read tho news and search
the advertisements for bar
gains.
The morning paper is s
sort of casual caller. The
evening paper is a visitor, a
friend,counselor and com
panion. Its influence is far
stronger with its readers
than the influence of the has
tily-scanned morning paper.
That is why it produces so
much better results for the
advertiicr.
