CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT FER
TILITY.
Every season
much disappoint- a ,
ment is caused by
low percentage of
fertility of eggs ,
during the hatch- h mW)
ing season 1 '
As a rule, year-
old birds and over j/
are preferable and ltl€
not forced they
will lav large eggs r »
which will hatch rOUttVV
stronger and bet
ter chickens. __
Ml breeding Ijnf/nr
males should be A-Zt/Ltizr
selected for their
Health is my first I J T
consideration. The first thing to ob
tain good fertility is good breeding
stock with good constitution. Unless
the breeding stock are sound, henlthy
aifd in good condition, satisfactory re
sults can not be obtained.
Eggs from birds out of condition
either from inbreeding, sickness, im
proper food or Insanitary surround
ings will not produce good results.
It is advisable never to breed from a
bird that has been sick.
If the hens are over fat and slug
gish the eggs will prove infertile.
When selecting a male bird it must
always be considered that he is one
half of the flock. He must be absolute
ly vigorous and well developed, and by
all means avoid sluggish males.
Fowls on free range will produce a
greater per cent of fertile eggs than
those in confinement.
If weather is favorable breeders
should be at liberty to take outdoor
exercise dally.
The breeding stock must be kffpt busy
if fertile and strong germs ate
desired.
The best way of getting this exer
cise Is to scatter their grain in a deep,
elwn litter.
Too stimulating food should not be
used, as this will force th® breeders to
lay more eggs and thus cause weak
germs.
The hens should be comfortably
housed, in reasonably ' tutini, airy
houses. Fresh air is one of. the most
important factors, with plenty of sweet
sunshine Above all. the bouse should
always be in a sanitary condition
Nothing will cause sickness quicker
than a close, damp, warm house.
Ry this way of feeding and caring
for the birds I very' seldom have a sick
bird on the farm.
Now, to care for the eggs Intended for
hatching is another Important factor.
They should be gathered several times
a. day in cold weather.
They' should be kept at a tempera
ture of from 45 to 55 degrees; all
small and too large eggs are rejected,
or ones with Imperfect shells. 1 al
ways keep them In a clean, airy cellar,
not wet nor dry, and turn them three
times each week. This way I keep them
for three weeks with good results.
All letter's and communica
tions ou poultry matters and
