From all over the county come reports of unfavorable weather conditions ’hat have retarded egg production, delay ed hatching and otherwise acted as a brake upon the usual . pring activities. Incubator manufacturers, poultry sup ply dealers and breeders are all agreed that the the season is running six to eight weeks later than usual, which, if true, will undoubtedly result in a shortage of the poultry crop this sea son unless people put aside their prejudice against late hatching and with the coming of settled weather go tn work with the determination to hatch and rear as many chicks as planned for in spite of the few weeks' delay. TVe would therefore most earnestly urge upon our readers the necessity of extending th” usual hatching period at least two months this spring in orderto prevent other abnormal conditions due to a shortage of supply which is almost sure to follow. Success in rearing the late hatched chicken is insured by giving him the same amount of care and interest as were bestowed upon his earlier brother. Like the first baby, the early chick al ways gets more than his share of atten tion. Keep hatching, keep up the in terest. FEEDING BABY CHICKS. A Western poultry breeder gives no food to incubator chicks for 36 hours after they are hatched. In fact, he says that he would rather let them go 40 hours than feed them sooner than 36 hours. The last thing the chick does before It breaks the shell is to absorb the yolk of the gg. After this its di gestive system is not In proper order to receive outside feed until it has had an opportunity to adjust Itself to new con ditions. This breeder gives each chick about two drops of cream after 36 hours and then nothing further for eight or ten hours. The second feed is approxi mately the same as the first. On the following morning cracked grain is scattered before them, and, if possi ble, two or three older chicks are placed in the pen so that they will teach the younger ones to pick up the grain and drink the water that Is provided. After this the little fellows are fed regularly three times a day.
