PLAN RAILROAD TO SPAN AFRICA French to Spend $600,000,000 for Electrified Line With Its Power From Lake Tchad. PARIS, May 4. —A great project for a French transafrlcan railway, extend ing from Tangier to Juba, on the banks of the Indian ocean, has been revealed by Senator Gauthier. The cost is esti mated at $600,000,000. The motive pow er is to be electricity, generated by water falls in the neighborhood of Lake Tchad. It is pointed out that when the proj ect is realized the present commercial status of the Mediterranean will be vir-_ tually that of a Latin lake, as by far the shortest route to India and the Far East will be by the transafrlcan rail road. France is especially eager to carry out the plan so as to compete with the projected Bagdad railway, backed by Germany. Ferries will carry *"4i.ns over the Strait of Gibraltar. 70-YEAR-OLDS FORM OLD MEN’S BROTHERHOOD MONTGOMERY CITY, MO., May 4 The “Old Men’s Brotherhood” was or ganized here, composed of members more than 70 years old. Most of the ills of childhood are caused by a sour, disordered stomach, sluggish liver and constipated bowels. They catch cold easily, become cross, listless, irritable, feverish, restless, tongue coated, don't eat or sleep well and need a gentle, though thorough physic—but don't try to force a nauseating dose of oil into the little one’s already sick stomach—it is cruel, needless and old-fashioned. Any child will gladly take Cascarets which act gently—never gripe or produce the slightest uneasiness-—though cleanses the little one's system, sweetens the stomach and puts the liver and bowels in a pure, healthw condi tion. i Full directions for children and grown-ups in each package. Though the pear crop in Georgia this season may be light, pecans will more than balance the loss, it is thought, and the fruit farmer will likely not feel a financial loss. Mr Montgomery said the early spring blight has caused considerable damage to the pear crop. ——i ' 1".: 11 — u .'..: .■.llijh' —u._ jl. —. jjiuui ■v -r- i « i i i . n i m—i—aa—— , , YOU CAN ENTER THE GREAT $16,000 PROVERB CONTEST NOW WITH AS GOOD A CHANCE OF VICTORY AS ANYONE ELSE Anyone who has hesitated to enter the Georgian’s $16,000 Proverb Contest under the impression that one’s chances are diminished if one enters after the con test is on, should revise his or her idea instantly.
