this good article . -
by a lady friend /■' >'01)1
who is very suc

Are you ready for f/fC

task and care to ——
the daily routine? / JOCtOK
Are th» coops all g '
in readiness, new-.
clean, whitewashed, and the place se
lected for the little feet to wander
upon?
Our little poults should be taken
from the mother hen as soon as thor
oughly dry, wrapped carefully in a
flannel cloth, and placed near the fire
in a warm, cozy place until all the
eggs are hatched. Little turkeys are
al wavs very anxious to get a glimpse
of ail there Is to be seen and see just
where they have come to. How we
delight to see the little speckled heads
peeping mV at us as if they were really
glad to find such a beautiful world
and such a snug hiding place. They
are not long finding their way out
from under the hen. and with their lit
tle “peep, peep*’ soon bring the faith
ful setter off her nest in quite a fussy
mood, quite forgetting her domain over
the eggs in the nest, or anything save
the lost, wandering turkey.
I have often been induced to think
that no creature lives so void of un
derstanding as a little turkey, about
one or two days old.
Thev fain would claim the old roost
er as a mother Until at. last he should
suddenly give them a sharp pick, warn
ing them they’ are decidedly mistaken
in the chicken and must let him alone.
By such means the mother hen is
often disturbed and becomes so rest
less that she not only breaks the eggs
but tramps the little poults to death.
For these reasons it is certainly wise
to take them away.
Now, we must begin to study some
thing to tempt the appetite of these
little treasures. Hard-boiled eggs!
Oh. how they love them! And well
peppered, too! When they are about
48 hours old give them their first meal,
a boiled egg with lots of pepper. There
is nothing more relished by them.
They will very domineeringly thank
you for all else, and with a chuckle of
delight pick the egg out from the rest.
In a couple of weeks we can begin to
cheat them by supplying a little crush
ed corn, corn bread, millet, cheese,
sweet cream, chopped dandelion, crack
ed wheat, etc., not forgetting the grit
and most especially the blood nleal. At
least two tablcspoonfuls Io every quart
of food. It is most excellent as a pro
ducer of hone, and adds vigor to the
whole system. Our aim must be to
keep them growing as fast as possible,
feed wholesome food, that contains both
animal and vegetable matter. Feed
scant but often. If they seem hungry
whenever you go to them, rest assured
they are on the right road, and then it
is mjr duty to keep them there
Fresh wafer, plenty of It. but only in
fountains and troughs. They never
want it poured on them. Be very
careful tn not let turks get wet, for
water, grease and lice are all the great,
death knells to turkey life.
The first step in our housing the
little ones is a coop. warm, well slat
ted and roofed to turn rain, placed in
a. sunny, grassy side, where it can be
changed often. Around the coop or di
rectly in front of it we place three or
four broad boards to give the little
poults good exercise and keep them
from running away. When they are
old enough to recognize their real
mother we take away the boards and
let them come and go at their own
free will. Wc will suppose the little
poults all to be raised with chicken
hens, and next month we will take the
old turkey hen in all her beauty as we
see and treat her with her brood of
little ones.
To me this certainly Is one of the
busiest months of the year, as I anx
iously watch the hens to their nest, set
the eggs, guard the! ncubators and Caro
for the little poults. May the next
month of birds and blossoms disclose
the beauties of the infant turkey in Ali
its loveliness.
