SQUAB RAISING.
From
the
Poultry
Doctor
After breeding
fancy pigeons as a
hobby for many
years. I tried
squab raising,
starting with two
thousand pairs of
pigeons. but I
soon found that
there Is a vast
difference be
tween raising
birds for pleasure
and raising them
for profit. Al
though the work
was in both cases
enjoyable and
even fascinating, the latter contained
problems that it was imperative to
solve, and involved such arduous and
incessant labor that until ordef was
brought out of chaos the pleasurable
Interest was almost counterbalanced bv
anxiety. Six hundred of the two thou
sand pairs were homers Imported from
Belgium: the other fourteen hundred
pairs were assembled in small flocks
from numerous sources in this country.
This was about ten years ago. I am
now firmly convinced that, if I could
have purchased from some reliable
breeder three hundred or four hundred
pairs of birds that were vigorous and
ftee from disease, even though I had
paid as much money as for the two
thousand pairs, it would have been
more profitable and would have saved
me a great deal of very puzzling work
and worry.
In those days few squab ranches were
run with any systematic plan for pro
ducing reliable breeding birds. For
years most of the available pigeons
had been flying round innumerable
barns In the country, and consisted for
the most part of old, worn-out breed
ers and a large excess of male birds
As the demand sot squab breeders
gradually increased these birds were
shipped from the country to city deal
ers. who sorted them atfd sold the best
looking ones to beginners in squab
raising.
Advice for the Novice.
Needless to say. such ventures us
ually resulted In failure, sos-it is al
most impossible to judge the breeding
qualities of pigeons by their appear
ance alone. My previous experience
with pigeons had taught me what
should be expected from good birds and
how to take care of them, but I had
never before faced the necessity of
culling from two thousand pairs a few
hundred pairs of really good producers.
If 1 had not loved the work and been
sure that each time I discarded a single
unproductive bird or pair I was im
proving the flock I should have given
up In disgust. It was a slow and te
dious process and th a novice would
have been most bewildering and al
most hopeless.
, My advice to a beginner is to start
with a few good birds from a reliable
breeder who can guarantee the age.
sex mating and health of the stock, and
who will give a three months trial of
their breeding qualities. Then the be
ginner should grow into the business
only in proportion to the success at
tained. keeping records of the produc
tion of each pair and discarding those
that fall in production. From such
starts I know of many successful de
velopments, but from a larger begin
nlng the result is almost always fail
tire.
In the early days there was no eas
ily distinguished colored bands such as
are now used, and If many birds in a
pen were apparently alike, colored
strings, tapes, and tile like were fast
ened to the right leg of the male and
the left leg of the female. Each bird
of a pair had the same color, but I’
was different color from that of any
other pair In the pen Some birds
could be recognized by peculiarities of
plumage, but the method was cum
bersome and slow.
Th" bands w hich are now used have
two strips of celluloid, reinforced on the
inside with aluminum stiff enough to
hold securely. They can be bent round
a lead pencil, opened enough to insert
a pigeon’s leg and then pinched shut
again. These bands are usually made
in fifty different colors or combina
tions so colors. Each pair of birds is
therefore known by Its color; R for red,
H 8 for rod and blue. \V Y for white
and yellow, and so on A bird can
be identified at a glance as it leaves
its numbered nest or alights on it.
Usually only twenty or twenty-five of
the most easilj distinguished colors or
combinations of colors are used, as it
Is now generally conceded that for the
highest dais of squab production bet
ter results are obtained when onlx
twenty or twenty-five pairs of pigeons
are confined in one pen.
Pigeons are naturally very hardy and
prollfi". and if the owner is careful to
avoid inbreeding and to provide proper
breeding quarters and clean feed and
water it is not difficult to keep them so.
The best nesting material that I have
found is tobacco stems cut In lengths of
from six to eight inches, in most, squab
ranches the nesting places are built of
hoards 1 bv 12 inches wide and from
5 1-2 to 6 feet long. The edges are
fastened to the walls about a foot apart
and drawer-like shelves slide in be
tween them on cleats These drawers
have no sides except the long boards
which support them, but have a front
piece about four inches high. They
can he easily < leaned by dumping the
contents Into a wheelbarrow or other
receptacle. The tobacco steins are
scattered on one part of the inside pen
floor, so that they may be kept dry
and the pigeons may conveniently help
themselves.-—H. Butcher in Country
Gentlema n.
