was the worst of any, however, and

more trouble tomorrow and Sunday.
To guard as much as possible against

Resenting Efforts to
‘Save* Him, Shoots Up
Church, Hits Pastor
The Rev. William A. Rolland, col
ored. is in Grady hospital today with a
bullet in his shoulder, fired by a back
slider who resented the pastor’s ef
forts to bring him back into the fold.
A fusillade of pistol shots emptied
the negro First Union Baptist church,
Schofield and Horton streets, scattered
the congregation to the four winds and
sent the, pastor to the hospital. The
“bad nigger" who did the shooting was
lost in the excitement.
Charley Leaks was the derelict mem
ber who caused a stampede when he
emptied his pistol at the pastor be
cause the latter had attempted to bring
the sinner back into the fold. Leaks
resented the repeated visits of the pas
tor to his home and last night he loi
tered in the rear of the church.
As the pastor began his exhortation,
Leaks leveled his revolver. As the first
sentence was concluded, five shots
flashed above the congregation's head
and five bullets whistled over their
ears, one striking the pgator.
LINES SOUTH MUST
GIVE NEWPORT NEWS
RATES OF NORFOLK
WASHINGTON, May 10.—The pres
ent rate situation on the Southern. At
lantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line
and Norfolk and Western is discrimi
natory and prejudicial to Newport
News. Va., and favorable to Norfolk,
was the ruling today by the Interstate
Commerce Commission in the case
brought by the Chamber of Commerce
of Newport News.
Under an arrangement by the de
fendants prior to 1899. Newport News
and Norfolk took equal freight rates to
and from common points, but because
of a disagteement as to divisions the
Southern lines withdrew from the
agreement, and since that time New
port News rates have been higher than
the Norfolk rates
The Southern lines do not extend to
Newport News, bur through connec
tions participate in the Newport News
traffic to and from the South and con
trol the rates. The decision today holds
that the Southern carriers can not es
cape responsibility for this discrimina
tion merely because their rails do not
extend into Newport News, and that
the latter city Is entitled to the same
rates as Norfolk,

FINISH FIGHTFDR
T. R. IN FLORIDS
Plan to Elect New Committee
in Order to’Unhorse the
Taft Leaders.
r
JACKSONVILLE. FLA., May 10.—
Roosevelt Republicans in Florida have
started a fight to the finish against the
Taft organization, now in control of
the party machinery in this state.
At the convention of the DuVal coun
ty Republicans yesterday afternoon
Chairman H. L. Anderson offered to
pay the expenses of a state primary
to be held on Saturday, June 1, to
give the Republicans in the state an
opportunity to express_ their choice for
the presidency and to -elect national
convention delegates and a new state
executive committee. The offer was
accepted and the primary will be ar
ranged.
Chairman Anderson addressed a com
munication to Henry S. Chubb, of
Gainesville, Taft leader in Florida and
chairman of the Republican state exec
utive committee, which is now recog
nized by the national committee as
“regular.” In this Anderson designated
the Chubb organization as a “conspira
cy” among officeholders of the state to
exclude from participation in the par
ty's affairs all Republicans except those
holding Federal appointments. He fur
ther charged that the Chubb organi
zation plays in tn the hands of the Dem
ocrats and that the delegates elected
at the recent state convention at Palat
ka “have not even the shadow of a
party behind them."

Mi-O-Na Stomach Tablets
Gently Coax the Gastric
Juices to Do Their
Duty.
Belching of gas and sour food into
the mouth means that the food in your
stomach is fermenting and forming
poisonous gases.
It means more: it means that your
stomach is bad; that it is not pour
ing into and mixing with the food the
gastric juices which are necessary to
properly digest food.
If this condition is allowed to con
tinue. the stomach will become flabby
and weak and the blood will become
watery or impoverished.
