The runs for poultry will, of course, have to be arranged, accord ing to the area available. Colo nies or flocks of fowls should not exceed ,100. and if only 50, so much the better. A run about <3O feet b.v 100 feet will' be sufficient for 25 or 30 fowls, and the size of the run should be increas- A d'vice From the Poultry Doctor ed in proportion to the number of birds kept. Shelter should be provided by the planting of shrubs, trees, hedges, etc. Tree lu cerne can be recommended for this pur pose. It is hardy and of quick growth, and the leaves are very suitable for poultry. By cutting the tree back on the top, an undergrowth is encouraged and shelter as well as food is produced. Change of runs is also necessary to in sure the health of poultry. After fowls have been constantly on the same ground for sonje time the soil will be come foul, and the stock are apt to contract disease. This can be avoided b.v changing the fowls to another run for a couple of months, during the year. Remove the birds about the middle of June, and turn the run over with eithet plough, spade or fork. Then sow it down with either rye or prairie grass. Allow it to rest till the middle of Sep tember, when the grass will have a good foothold. The run will not only be freshened, but it will also provide the stock with a good supply of green food. Grit must, also be furnished, and a regular supply is necessary to aid digestion. Quartz grit or sharp gravel is the best, and shell'grit, broken ' rock ery and old mortar pounded up is use ful. A dust bath is a very necessary adjunct. A box about three feet by five feet, with sides six inches high, will he a handy sized one, and this should be filled with equal parts of fine sand and wood ashes, with a few handfuls of sul phur added occasionally. The arrangement of runs so as to economize bot.h time, and labor should be observed. Tn laying out a number of yards, the, better plan is to have ihetn about 100 feet long by 25 or 30 feet wide. They should be arranged in two rows, with the 100 feet running back. A lane or passage should be left between the two rows, and the.doors of the pens should open into this, which will allow the pons to he entered easily. The feeding and drinking troughs can be placed along and partly through the fence, and the fowls may be fed and watered quickly by this arrangement without going Into the pens at all.
