ALABAMA PROBES
FUND WAGES
Awry Accounts of Many-County
Officials Are Already on
Way to Courts.
MONTGOMERY. ALA.. May IT—A
sweeping investigation, involving near
ly all the county officials in the state
of Alabama, vs ’ll be begun in the next
two weeks The probe follows the re
port of state examiners, showing al
ready serious discrepancies in Mobile
and Montgomery county accounts.
So frequent have been the finding of
large technical shortages among va
rious county officials during the admin
istration of Governor O’Neal that it is
regarded as imperative for a legal test
tn be made of the laws on the subject.
Several months ago. a state examiner
docketed large discrepancies against
certain Mobile county officials, running
into the thousands. This week Exam
iner <’. E Met'all filed a report main
taining that Treasurer W. B. Whiting
of Montgomery county, owes the coun
ty $10,337 for paying out money on
warrants which. It is claimed, were is
sued illegally by the hoard of revenue
Will Sue Mobile Officer.
It is asserted that Solicitor Clarke,
of Mobile county, contemplates bring
ing suits against certain Mobile offi
cials to recover the money which they
are alleged to be short on these tech
nicalities This will bling the question
up for a determination by the courts.

his evidence to Solicitor \V. T. Seibels,
who will thus be compelled to take
some action.
DIXIE WOMEN HURT
IN AUTO CRASH THAT
KILLS ST. LOUIS MAN

Berg, a wealthy coal dealer of St. Louis,
is dead and Mrs. II P. Johnson and
her daughter. Virginia Johnson, of
Memphis, and Miss G. Bell, of St.
Louis, are lying dangerously injured
today as a result of a collision between
Berg's automobile, in which they were
riding, and a Missouri Pacific train.
The accident occurred at Barrett sta
tion when Berg tried to drive his ma
chine across the track. The women
will probably recover.

Another Earthquake
Shocks Mexico City:

was shaken by a .-light earthquake to
day. following two distinct shocks yes
terday.
Forty-seven persons are known to
have been killed in five towns and vil
lages surrounding Colima mountain in
the earthquake of Wednesday Three
pet sons are dead in Guadajajara. v here,
in the course of 24 hours. 35 shocks,
some of them severe, were felt. The
walls of the cathedral there were split
and three public buildings were totally
destroyed.
MISTRIAL FOR LINDSEY
IN WEST POINT KILLING
LA GRANGE. GA., May 10.—After
about twenty hours' deliberation, the
jury in the tr ial of J. E. Lindsey, charg
ed with killing Patrolman
of West Point, on the night of February
28. disagreed and a mistrial was de
clared. Lindsey was returned to the
county jail to await the next term of
the superior court. E. H Echols charg
ed with being an accessory, will not be
tried until the next term of court. H<
is also in jail.

resumed active operations in the archi
pelago. according to advices received

upon the island of Searpanto and took
the Turkish garrison prisoners, running
the Italian flag up above all the pub
lic buildings.
Another squadron seized thirty sail
ing vessels in which the Turks of the
Rhodes garrison had embarked to flee.

Scarpanto lies 28 miles south of
Rhodes. It is 30 miles long and 8 miles
wide. It has a population of 10,000,
mostly Greeks.
