COTTON.
NEW YORK. May 14.—Lower cables
and a more settled weather map caused
a decline of 2 to 6 points at the opening
of the cotton market, today, although the
tone was steady. Pressure from the beat
side and liquidation from commission
houses also helped depress the list.
Futures in Li-werpool were quiet, spot
prices there were easier.

NEW YORK. May 14. - A new high rec
ord in Canadian Pacific was established
al the opening of the stock market to
day when this issue gained 1%. going to
261. The feature, however, was the
strength shown by the hard coal carrying
railroads. This strength was induced by
a belief in Wall Street circles that the
labor troubles in the anthracite regions
would soon be settled
Lehigh Valley opened l',.c higher at
178% There was a brisk demand for
Reading, which was up % at 176%.
Substantial advances were made in
many issues at the outset, and a strong
tone was in evidence. Strength in Ameri
can Sugar Refining, which developed
yesterday, was continued in spite of the
fact that the government is taking evi
dence against the company in a dissolu
tion suit filed under the Sherman anti
trust act American Sugar Refining was
up 1% at the outset with no abatement
of the demand in sight. United States
Steel common rose %. Amalgamated
Copper was up % and Smelting gained ,4.
At the end of fifteen minutes a selling
wave developed, which carried off consid
erable of the initial gain.
The curb was irregular.
Americans in London ruled firm above
New York parity. Canadian Pacific there
was active and strong
