Democratic Executive Commit tee Must Determine How Far Unit Method Shall Apply. One of the pa-ticularly tough nuts i ’h* state Democratic executive com-| mittee will be called upon to crack when I it assembles to call the next general stat* primary -probably for .August ] is th* question of he manner of nomi nating judges and solicitors general in Georgia. There are some very sharp and em phatic differences o' opinion among politicians and aspirants for office with respect to this matter and it will re quire more than orditfary ’ dipromacy upon the part of th* state committee to settle it with approximate satisfaction to all parties concerned. There are thus® who stoutly approve of th* county unit plan of nominating ; stat® house officers and governors, but ■ who. nevertheless, view with alarm that I same plan with regard to the nominal ling of judges and. solicitors. They | | point out that this plan might give some, large counties absolute cpntrol of certain judicial ■ circuits, to th* utt>?._ exclusion of th* small counties therein. . This thc-v affirm, would sui'ety be un democratic and unfair. There-are others who maintain. Just as stoutly, that tho county unit being fair and democrat!* within the state in a large class of elections it Is fair and democrat!- In all; that the principle applied to the governorship applies no less surely to the judgeships and solic itorships. They ■ aver that while it might work to the seeming ,disadvan tage of -me or two circuits; jt surely would be th® fit and proper t.hifig in th-, vast majority of them, hence sffduld b® adopted. Will Petition Committee. Little if any doubt exists that the i committee will - ail a genera! primary i under th* county unit plan; certainly I in so far as th* governorship and th" i stat* house officers are concerned. I 1 doubtless will be petitioned to make an i exception of this tn the matter of judg- - I ships and solicitorships. Whether it j w ill agree to this petition is the prob lem vexing a good many ambitious -Georgians today. Some are firmly of ] the opinion that it will; others are equally as positive that it will not. When, in 1896, the legislature <!i ■ vested itself of th® right of electing | judges and solicitors general’ and plan- d j it directly in the hands of the people, ii j provided that th'se officers might be I nominated by the various circuits, but * that they must be elected at large - ' - There was al that time a Ay vigi lant and aggressive Populist party tn i Georgia—it had 45/nembers of’the leg islature of 1896-98— and th* election of judges and solicitors was arranged aft - | er the fashion it was for th* frank and I avowed purpose of preventing ’he cap., : ture of one or moi* judgesnips and so-, licitorsWps tty the ■■Pops” This rattier queer.and extrao r rima.;.
