_To the Poultry Doctor:
I have some turkey eggs setting and
I would like to ask what should I feed
them when they hatch, what care J
should take of them in order to raise
them. I have heard that wheat bran
was good for young turkeys. If It is,
I would iike to know if you advise giv
ing it dry or in a mash? Thanking
■' oll in advance for this help/ I atn
h ours truly, MRS. T D. H
Atlanta, Ga.
ANSWER.
1 Iler should be removed from the.
nest when the hatch is through to some
quiet place, confined in a coop and left
tione for at least 36 hours from time
hatched. Nature has provided the yolk
of the egg for their system lo absorb
and. subsist on for this length of time.
Be sure to allow them clean sand or
grit the first thing. if obtainable.
Sprat 3 chick meal is excellent for their
first feed. Mon can feed this for the
first week. Keep tlie hen In coop, but
let the poults out to exercise if weath
er Is good. Hard boiled eggs mashed
fine, with a little black pepper sprinkled
over ft. is also fine for the first two or
three days, after which they must have
a little green food of some kind —a
grass run is the best. Gradually change
diet to little chick grain anil a little
beefscrap, if they can not get these on
the range.
To the Poultry Doctor:
A .pen of Ancona pullets owned by
us lias established what we think is an
enviable record in egg production, and
we should like to hear of any just as
good or better.
The pen comprises nine birds. They
were hatched October 19. 1911. and be
gan laying March 8. at which time they
were under five months of age. During
the balance of that month 86 eggs were
produced. During the 30 days oft April
184 eggs were laid, i’p to May 10. 315
eggs were produced. Al that time we
put six other Ancona pullets with near
ly as good a record as the others with
the pen of nine. The combined pen
averages ten eggs a day.
Hoping the above Item will prove of
sufficient interest for publication, we
remain. Yours verv truly.
