in an apparently

is due either di- yl. -

ly to the want of
fresh ground and r\

My expU">ene< in
chick tearing at —_
all seasons of the / Jnfinr
year has led me to.
the con elusion
that one can not start rearing them on
the same ground throughout the sum
mer and autumn without very serious
loss, and I should certainly confine my
operations in this department to one
season if I had not some fresh ground
at my disposal wherein to keep the
later birds.
The vigorous spring chicks come
along in their hundreds and clean up
even- scrap of green stuff and every
slug, worm and insect above the ground
and when the> have ben reared the
ruir- are not in the same fresh and
wholesome state that they were at the
beginning of spring after the winters
frost anti snow. Indeed, they are not
bv any means fit to receive another
batch of chickens until they have had
some months' rest. Bui there Is noth
ing easier than to tear summet and
fall chicks on a piece of fresh ground,
and no better place can he selected
than a meadow from which the hay has
recently been mown and to which poul
try have not had access for several
months Another excellent place tot
rearing late chicks is a stubble field
which has yielded a crop of gram and
“ teeming with insect life, scattered
grains and green and tender shoots ol
plants. .
Such a place as this is an ideal one
for autumn chick rearing, and portable
coops max be used, but let. litem a
- lean. If'they have been occupied
throughout the summer, I would not
use them again until I had them thoi
mighly.scraped, washed, dried ami new
lv painted. Then there is no danger
that they may convey the germs of
gapes, roup, tuberculosis or any of the
other ailments to which baby chicks are
sub.iec,t.
FIR ELE S S BROODERS.
I’ircless brooders have been tried
thoroughly the past season, and reports
do not iuslifv their general us--, unless
the user understands the business bet
ter than is indicated by the reports
reaching ns from many of them, who
have failed signally in their operation.
This has been a very variable spring,
the changes in temperature being SO
varied as to tax the ingenuity of the
experienced poultrymen to meet them.
Fireless brooders are. however, not
without their merits. Th°y are being
used .successfulit b. v many, ami those
who have failed have doubtless con
tributed their share toward this result.
\Ye have not advocated their general
use for the very reason that, we expect
ed manv would fall who would expect
mere from them than the originators
ever expected. The fire or healed
brooder will maintain Ils standing .is
the popular mode of artificially brood
ing the bulk of the chicks, hut this does
not implv that the other brooder will be
discarded, on the contrary, it has been
demonstrated conclusively that good,
strong, healthy chicks can be brooded
in them, at a considerable saving of
pxpetise and rime.
Now that the weather conditions are
becoming: such that further sex ere
weather is not to be expecteo. the moic
general us.- of the fireless brooder is
practical if not advisable. They- are
easilv and cheaply made, cheese boxes
being admirably adapted for their con
struction. Not over 25 chicks should l>e
placed in a single box. however, and
these should be divided as they increase
in size to one-half the original number.
