50GIJL EVIL IS IN HANDS OF POLICE Charter Amendment Giving the Chief Power to Close Guilty Hotels Being Drafted. L nder instructions from council, City Attorney Mayson is now drafting a enarter amendment which will give the city police pow’er to arlbtrarily close all hotels that foster the “social evil.” The resolution was introduced in council by 1 'rville Hall at the request of the vice commission and is the first move tn the campaign against vice. Members of the commission say they expect to close numbers of such houses in Atlanta run under the guise of ho tels. They believe this to be the most important step that can be taken to ward social reforms. Council has formally turned down the petition of the Frances Wil lard chapter of the Georgia W. C. T. U. for woman representation on the vice commission. It was done on the rec ommendation of the police committee of council. No action was taken on the suggestion of the committee that a separate commission of women might he created. Except for the voluntary suggestions that women may make to the vice com mission, the women of Atlanta will, therefore, have no official part in the investigations and proposals for re forms. Spelman seminary, Gammon Theological seminary, Morris Brown college, has decided to stimulate and encourage self-help among negroes and to co-operate with the people of the state and of the South in the im provement of farm life. P. C. Parks, farm director of Clark university, made this statement about it: “As a line for common co-operative work, the federation has decided upon the boys corn clubs among the negro boys of Georgia. Nine counties have already been organized, with 322 boys contesting. The committee also recom mended a corn show to be held this fall. This was adopted and S2OO ap propriated by the federation to be given as prizes.” TARHEELS INVITE ALL NORTH STATE MEN TO JOIN ORGANIZATION The North Carolina Society of At lanta today invites all "Tar Heels" and descendants of “Tar Heels" to affiliate with it in conserving the memories of the Old North State. At an evening dinner at the Geor gian Terrace, commemorating the an niversary of the signing of the Meck lenburg Declaration of Independence, a permanent organization was effected. Shepard Bryan was named president: Dr. John E. White, vice president; T. B. Higdon, secretary, and Dr. E. G. Bal linger, treasurer. Burton Smith, J. J. Disosway and P. C. McDuffie were chosen directors. It'was decided that the next meeting would be held at the University club, when a reception would be given to Judge Jeter C.
