A conffnon idea among many pou!- a . try raisers seems /J (I'cJICC to be that the late hatches are, as a • •ule. unprofitable hfnm Some tell us that z ' ’ June hatched chicks are no good y/, - —they never got IHC tile size or have the quality thev 71 gel from the ear- FOUttrV Iler hatches. It is true we much pre. fer the early / jriflnv batches to the late A_>eizvzrzz ones, as the work of getting the same results Is less, but if p'operlv cared for the late hatches can he grown to the proper size and many winners can ho picked from the flock. In fact, some of the best win ning specimens at the leading shows the past season were hatched from the last week In May to the last week in •lune. Owing to the weather conditions this season, which have been so much dif ferent than have been seen In many years, the cold extending well up Into April, and In some sections snow on the ground the first week of April, there has been a tendency to make a great shortage In the number of early hatched birds. Reports from all sections of the country seem to verify the above. No- Ivody- ha' cared to purchase eggs for hatching and take any chances on the weather until It became settled and no doubt many have become discouraged and given up the idea of purchasing believing that birds hatched after May are unprofitable. 1 hose who have their average num ber hatched and growing nicely at this time may feel themselves In clover, for there will be a greater demand this year than has been known In the past Those who are short on numbers will make and do well to run the batches well up' to the inlddli of July. These late hatched birds will come through all tight if given the same conditions which surround the .•arli hatches. Eggs laid in May should be strong In feriilitv because the breeding stock should be In the very best condition I he breeding birds have had some of nature's best food -Insects, worms and tender, green grass—and if thev have had proper care in the matter of i-lean liness and pure wate- there is no ira on why a brood of .'hicks hatched from their eggs during the fore part . f June should not have the strength ami vigor to grow right from the start. It must he remembered that lice and mites thrive as soon as warm weather begins. That is the kind of weather they enjoy, therefore we can not be ton thorough In disinfecting by means of spraying with liquid disinfectants anil lice killers and dusting with lice pow der; In fact, we must do everything In our, power to I e e p b( , t h chicks ami foil S free from these • m g V ,|, stroving pests and we can do th|..- If we 'miv ■ sufficient energy ourselve Look through tlie advijrtisement s in tln > columns and send for th*- printed mn - - :er of the firms that make or sell dis infectants ami lice kllh.s. She is not nearly so de structive as you think.
