PRIEST'S JEWELS AREIILUELESS Collection of Pastor Who Acci dentally Drank Poison for Time Awes Berliners. BERLIN, Mat 29.—Th* circum stances attending the recent death of ■< certain pastor. Liebe, for a day or two promised Berliners a story of melodra matic and mysterious interest, but the interest has been dispell cl by police in vestigation. The pastor, a retired army chaplain, aged 70. died suddenly after drinking a liquor glass of what Ip supposed to be brandy, but, in fact, was the deadly poison, atrophine. His housekeeper was present while h" took the drink, but could, do nothing toward saving him. The police authorities on making an investigation of the pastor’s lodgings found what appeared to be one of the most valuable and varied assortments of gems that could possibly be imag ined. The treasures of Aladdin's cav* or the gold and jewels of the Count of Monte Cristo's secret isle hardly suf ficed for the local reporters in d - scribing the number, beauty and costli ness of the collection, and there was one particular goblet, encrusted with diamonds and rubies and emeralds, to which no printer’s,ink could do justice. Naturally, experts were set to work to estimate the treasure, but with the extraordinary and lamentable result, that it turned out Io be no treasure al all. The gems were imitation, of glass and stone, like those boys and girls purchase at a country fair for any sum from a penny to a shilling .Some of them were decidedly pretty and the de ceased used the atrophine foi polishing and testing them. The wondrous goblet was assigned by the experts a maximum value of SSO. TRAIN~SMASHES HOSE CART; ONE FIREMAN IS DEAD, 7 BADLY HURT CHICAGO, May 29. —On* fiieman was killed and one is believed to be dying, while six others were severely injured in a collision today between a. hose cart and a railroad train. The train, a freight on the Chicago .limc tion railway, was backing In on a stub track. The hose cart, responding to a Are alarm, tried to cross ahead of th* train. The caboose of the train crashed into the cart and Jammed it against a. bumping post, crushing it like an egg shell. George J. Laughlin, a pipe man. was killed and Lieutenant Morris O’Day is so badly injured that physicians say he can not recover. The members of the freight train's crew were arrested and held pending the coroner's inquest. JUSTICE LAMAR EXPECTED TO ATTEND BAR MEETING SAVANNAH, GA., May 29. —Justice Joseph R.
