HOME-MADE LICE POWDER.
With most poul-
trymen. lice is an A
ever present evil. riUUILi
Lice multiply so
rapidly that tin- j ■
jess a person is rrotn
right on his job,
constantly. they
trill soon get 'he il] p
upper hand The ''»C
following is the
method used by
the writer in rid- / OH ill V
ding his houses
and fowls of lice
Every spring h» / Jnrtnr
<ives the inside of * 1
each house a good
coat of whitewash. The perches are
torn down, saturated with oil and run
through a blaze until the outer surface
Is thoroughly charred About once a
month the perches are sprayed with
kerosene. The nest boxes are removed,
thoroughly cleaned and whitewashed
The old nesting material is replaced
with tobacco stems, which is a guar
antee that no lice will inhabit that nest
for at least a year. Our work does not
end when the house has been thorough
ly renovated. The fowls themselves
must be rid of the pests. For this pur
pose a lice powder is necessary. Many
of the lice powders on the market are
worthless. Most lice powders are made
of tobacco stems or tobacco in some
form, ground into a fine powder. Un
less used while fresh, the tobacco will
lose strength and thus be Ineffectual
as a killing agent. The writer has
found a home-made powder that gives
better results than any commercial
powder he ha- ever tried. The ingre
dients are as follows Two ounces of
crude carbolic arid, four ounces of
ftasoline and one pound of air-slaked
ime. The gasoline and carbolic acid
are poured together and stirred thor
oughly Keep away from fire. The
mixture is then poured over the lime
atid thoroughly paddled. After stand
ing for a day or two. the gasoline will
have evaporated and a fine powder,
■with a strong carbolic acid odor is the
result. Use In sifter-top cans. The
fowls should be dusted with this pow
der at least three times, allowing in
tervals of a week between dustings.
The first dusting, if thoroughly done,
■will kill most of the lice, but in five or
elx days a new crop will hatch out
from the eggs on the fowls. Usually
three dustings will rid the fowls of the
peats. — T. Z. Richey in Poultry Item.
