Y 4*4—j—l—*— l**;—l— l—l— l***—l— l—l— !-ii 1 BEGIN WHEN FOWLS ARE YOUNG. It would be poor policy to begin in A the middle of win- JA.CI’VIC€ ter to throw open the windows and j-. apply the fresh- b fOl/i air treatment in 1 full doses to fowls that have been j h used to hothouse IflC conditions, but by beginning in th fall and getting lOUitKV the birds accus- r tomed to the cold by. degrees, they llnrlnr may be kept in i A—fUL IV’ shed entirely open on the south side and not only live through the most severe weather, but produce eggs in paying quantities. As soon as the chicks are large enough to roost, an apple tree makes the best possible colony 4 house. They may safely be left there until Novem ber. and the toughening process thus started may be followed up in a shed that is tight on three sides or in an open-front house that will keep off -the snow and sleet, and protect from draughts, without cutting off the fresh air supply. Fowls reared and wintered under such conditions are in the best possible shape, when the breeding sea son opens, to lay hatchable eggs that will produce chicks with the vigor and stamina to escape white diarrhoea and numerous other perils of chlckenhood that just now are causing our scientitic brethren so much trouble and loss of sleep. In my opinion, nine-tenths of these troubles are caused by pampered, sickly breeding stock. Don’t Fuss.—Don't fuss and worry oyer the little fellows. Feed and water them tight and they will do the rest. Keep them clean and free from lice, but don't be stuffing them with food all the time. Let them do a little digging on their own account. If they do go hungry part of the day they will work harder. Feed what they will eat at night, but don't fuss about them eating too little, or for fear they won't get enough. And, above all. don't fuss because they eat t good deal of feed. If they are not worth the feed they eat. get rid of them anil get some that ate worth considerable more than they eat. Don't Neglect.—Don't think that the chicks will get along somehow. Don't think that any old kind of water, hot. dirty, filthy or no water at all will do for the chicks. Give them pure, fresh water at least twice a day. Don't think that any old place will do for them to roost or hover in. Keep it clean and you will prevent, to a great extent, lice, mites and scaly legs. Don't neglect to feed them if you want them to glow, and remember that a growing chick should have something besides corn. And don't that because a chick can eat whole corn that there is no nee< to crack it. Don't neglect to treat your chicks with gentleness. They will re spect you by doing and growing better. Again. T say. don’t rush. Use nature’s way, but If you can improve on it by the use of good common sense, dn so. But do not omit common sense. And 1 say, don’t fuss. Do your part and the chicks will do theirs, if you do your part in a decent way. And. lastly, don't neglect. Re not lazy unto the doing of good work, es pecially where diligence may mean many dollars and cents and sense to you.
