JUDGE H. H. PERRY
INDORSED BY FRIEND
Col, Merritt Gives Our Readers a
Synopsis of the Life of Judge
Perry, Who Is a Candidate for
U. S. Senator From Georgia.
There is only one office that is of more '
importance within the gift of the people .
than that of United States senator, and
that is the office of president of the
I nited States. T/ie writer was a mere i
boy when he formed the acquaintance
ship of Mr. Perry, who was at that time
occupying the chair of professor of math
ematics in the North Georgia Agricultural
College at Dahlonega, Ga.. which position
he tilled with distinguished ability until '
he resigned to take up the practice of I
law.
Colonel Perry came to the bar eminently '
equipped for the discharge of the arduous!
duties imposed upon the practitioner ot '
that learned profession; he hung out his i
shingle in Gainesville, at which place he
has continually resided, and took rank at
once among the ablest lawyers of the
northeastern circuit; possessed of a class
ical education, and a trained mind, he '
naturally went after the analysis of a i
legal proposition. He has the happy fac
ulty of never appearing disconcerted 'in the
court room in the trial of a ease in which
he appears as counsel. We have seen
eminent lawyers have him, as thev '
thought, up in the air. but when Perrv I <
came down he would light on his feet. He ,
is the very prince of professional cour
tesy In the court room, and of politeness •
in his social life, his professional, private
and public life Is as spotless as thrice ’
sifttO snow. His attainments as a lawyer <
and statesman peculiarly fit him for a .
representative in the United States sen
ate. to many people’s way of thinking '
the most august body of men that as
sembles upon the face of the earth.
It was a rare treat to hear the great
Chief Justice Logan E. Bleckley discuss ,
men and measures, and he never Indulged
In idle talk. In commenting upon the
abilities of the able lawyers of the state ,
who appeared before the supreme court
he said (hat Mr. Perry's work (alluding ’
to his briefs and pleadings) bore the Im- I .
print of the master’s hand. All lawyers
know that no greater compliment than
this could be paid a lawyer, as well as .
they know the same could have
come from no greater authority than the ’
renowned chief justice.
Senator Bacon will have been in the
United States senate eighteen years
when his present, term expires, the peo
ple should excuse him and let him take a
much needed rest. He Is now in sight of
the eigthtieth mile post of his life's jour
ney. It is true we need men in the sen
ate who are ripe in statecraft and schol
arly and legal attainments, but Senator
Bacon has arrived at that period of life
where a man becomes overripe. The. peo
ple of the state owe his retirement to him
as a mark of respect. The people of
Georgia will make no mistake in elect- I
ing Colonel Perry to the United States
senate. J. U. MERRITT.
