The reports reaching this of- a . lice from all sec- ICC tions of the coun try show the j— greatest shortage /■* t-nwi in early hatching L ' r * in history. The general consensus i of opinion is that lilt, the extreme cold weather which was something r OUitVV never before ex perienced seemed -- to put a damper I Inrfnf on the early Zfz/ hatching. Breed ers throughout the country are report ing the dullest season in early egg or ders in the history of their business, and consequently the supply will be very short for the season of 1912 and 1913. A word to the wise should be sufficient. With a shortage in early chicks, the equal of which has never before been reported, the demand for mid-summer hatched birds will be the greatest in the history of poultry cul ture. All possible effort should be put forth in getting out as many chicks during June as can be hatched. WHEN ARE EGGS FERTILE? The Maryland station recently made a test to determine the time required for eggs to become fertile after a male has been added to the breeding pen. Twenty single comb WTiite Leghorns, housed without runs, were kept from the male birds for three months. A cockerel of the same variety was added and on the fourth day following ten eggs were laid, seven of which were fertile. In another test, using eighteen Rhode Island Red pullets and one White Plymouth Rock cockerel, four eggs were laid on the seventh day and all were fertile, six were laid on the eighth day, three being fertile. In an other test, using a pen of the same breeds, eight eggs were laid on the eighth day, all being fertile. These tests, while not conclusive, seem ‘to indicate that it is safe to save eggs for hatch ing from a pen of Leghorn hens after the male bird has been in four days. In the case of the larger or the general purpose fowl the results show that pos sibly a longer period should be allowed to elapse—seven days being the time in this instance where Rhode Island Reds were used. It is possible, however, that the crossing of the breeds may have had something to do with the longer period.
