WSDN HEARD; GETS 5500 RAIL Hearing Is Attended by Big Crowd, and McDuffie Editor Is Bound Over. AUGUSTA. GA.. June 7.—Thomas E. Watson was bound over to the Federal court by United States Commissioner Godwin Friday in the sum of SSOO, on a charge of sending obscene matter through the mail. The, hearing lasted for two hours and twenty minutes and was replete with interest throughout. Mr. Watson's brother. Mr. J. F. Watson, signed the bond, which is returnable to the next session of the Federal court in Augusta in March or April. Mr Watson based his defense first on the question of the warrant being sworn out for him personally, when The Jeffersonian Publishing Company was responsible, and second, upon the motive he had in publishing the alleged obscene matter. Commissioner Godwin overruled Mr. Watson’s objection that his magazine be submitted as evidence. Mr. Wat son objected because his name did not appear as the publisher. Demanding the name of his prosecutor Mr. Watson said that he was an Ameri can facing accusation,, but there was no accuser present who could be held responsible for malicious prosecution in case he was not found guilty in the court. District Attorney Akerman replied that he himself was entirely responsi ble for the accusations. Mr. Watson read from various books whie.h are protected hv the copyright and in which there are obscene pas sages. hut the district attorney held that was no excuse. In summing up the evidence. Mr. Akerman said that it made no differ ence how good Mr. Watson’s motives were, the United States supreme court held that any matter which passes through the mails that tends to deprave and which is obscene is sent in viola tion of law. June 7.—A consent de cree, which guarantees to the Alumi num Company of America a substantial monopoly of the production and sale of aluminum wares in the United States, was entered in the United States dis trict court for the western district of Pennsylvania today in what is known as the aluminum trust case, whereby the government obtained a perpetual injunction curtailing the monopolistic tendencies of the aluminum trust in controlling the price of aluminum ware and bauxite in the United States and Europe. The decree prohibits the sale on the part of the Aluminum Company of America of aluminum abroad and like wise closes American markets to for eign manufacturers. Also Breaks a Combine. Agreements formerly in effect with foreign companies controlling the Im portation of and exportation of alum inum or bauxite and Illegally fixing the prices at which the raw material should he sold are expressly prohibited. .Contracts entered into between the Pittsburg Reduction Company, the Norton Company. Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company, Gustav A. Kruttschmidt and James C. Coleman, of Newark. N. J.. whereby the sales of aluminum and aluminum wares were restricted, are made unlawful. The combining of stock ownership or controlling or restraining the output of any product manufactured from aluminum, delaying, shipments or exer cising any methods fatal to the inde pendence of the concerns named as de fendants. is construed as a violation of the decree.
