PROVIDE SHADE FOR THE FOWLS.
More attention
should be paid to a
the care of breed- IC€
ing stock and the
growing young- ? .
sters these hot r*
days. As houses L
and yards are us
ually arranged so zA
as to get the most l fIC
sunshine during
the winter months r-j
it frequently hap- r'OUItVV
pens that they are
h o t, sweltering
pens during the llnrlnr
summer. The •i-z'C/CfCZZ
birds suffer in
such pens as these and will be un
profitable to the owner. The best place
to locate the houses is in an orchard,
where the foliage affords protection
from the sun's rays in summer and the
bare limbs will not keep out the sun in
the winter. The orchard is an ideal
place, receiving much benefit from the
fowls that fertilize the ground and
catch the bugs and worms which are in
jurious to the fruit trees, in case there
is no orchard or trees in the breeding
pens, artificial shade should be provided.
One of the best ways to make shade is
by stretching burlap (old feed sacks)
on frames running from the east to
the west, which will provide shade dur
ing the greater part of the day. This
will give the fowls a lot of comfort, and
is very beneficial to their health and
color of plumage. Now is the time to
tight the lice and mites more vigorously,
as these rests multiply very rapidly
during the hot weather. Extra precau
tion should be taken to keep them down.
Painting the roosts and nest boxes with
liquid lice killer is necessary. The
fowls should all be dusted every week
or so with a good lice killer or insect
powder, or better still, will be to dip
them all in a good dip. (See ad col
umns.) Spade up a small place in the
pens so as to provide a dusting place
for tile birds. This will aid them to
keep off the body lice.. Keep houses
clean; remove the perches, drop
boards and nests often and sprinkle
with a little'dry earth and slake lime.
See that all of the straw or nest ma
terial is removed from the nest boxes
and burnt up often. Painting the nest
boxes and roosts with a creosote paint
will help wonderfully. The houses
should have as much ventilation dur
ing the hottest summer nights as you
can possibly give them. Cut down the
amount of corn in the feeding and add
on green foot! and a large supply of
fresh water. So much is said in re
gard to the care of brooder stock that
the inexperienced poultryman would
think the chicks needed little or no
care after they were weaned by mother
hen or brooder, when in fact there Is
not a day in the life of a chicken that
it does not need the best of care.
Chick's to mature well must be from
good, healthy breeding stock of strong
constitution. Ton many breeders use
stock in their breeding pens that has
been cured of some disease simply be
cause it is an extra fine bird. This is a
great mistake, because a good many
of the chicks may inherit the disease or
will have weak vitality. 1 do not mean
to say that every bird that has had a
slight cold or some slight ailment should
be discarded from the breeding pen.
but such as have had an attack of
roup or more serious diseases. If the
chicks are from healthy stock there
should be no great mistake in raising
them.
Do not let the chicks want for any
thing during these hot days, and you
will be repaid this winter, both in eggs
and in having fine specttnqns to show’
the prospective buyer.
All letters and communica
tions on poultry matters and
for the question and answer
column should be addressed to
