Cuban Insurrectos Plan Re
venge if Ban on Negro
Political Party Stands.
SANTIAGO, June 13.—Generals Es
tonez and Ivonet, who head the revo
lution, declare that if the Morui lasv,
prohibiting negroes from forming a v
lltical party, is not annulled by Satur
day all persons encountered ’•y the
rebels and not of the negro race will be
killed on sight.
The threat has amused *’.e fears of
plantation owners to s he height of in
tensity and renewed pleas for further
protection are being made to President
GomCz. If the rebels violate all rules
of warfare and humanity by putting
this bloody threat into execution, the
United States may be compelled to in
tervene next week.
Looting of small plantations by the
insurgents continues.
Refugees arriving here today from
Palma Soriano, in Santiago province,
told an exciting story of a vl'lage r ear
that place being burned by a band of
negro men and women, who are fight
ing under the flag of the insurgents.
Several wfiites were killed by ths rebels
and all the others were driver, into
nearby plantations for safety.
Cuban Rebels Flee
Leaving 25 Dead
HAVANA. June 13.—One of the
bloodiest fights since the negro
tion broke out is going on near Pal
marito in Santiago province between
insurgents and 200 federals. 2he fight
ing began yesterday and the rebels
were compelled to retreat after -5 of
them had been killed, including their
two leaders, and seven had been taken
prisoners.
The rebels are being pursued by the
federals and a’ running battle is being
fought today in the jungle south of the
Cuban railroad line.
Three armed negroes surprised an
armed guard in this city early today
and attempted to assassinate him. They
were pursued after an alarm was given
but got away.

Land at Mayari
GUANTANAMO, CUBA, June 13
The auxiliary cruiser Eagle today land
ed 55 United States marines under
Captain Hooper at Mayari to relieve
the sailors from the Nashville landed
there Monday. They will protect
plantations and mining property.
Company D of the United States
marines is now stationed at Union
plantation near San Luis. They are
commanded by Major Shaw and Cap-|
tain Hirrill. Marines today found the I
bodies of four dead negroes near thei
plantation. They were placed in a ,
garbage cart and hauled to the ceme- I
levy, where they were buried without :
ceremony. It is not known how they ,
had been killed.

NEW YORK. June 13.—Staten Island
folk .say bullfrogs there croak only
from 5 a. m. to midnight, thereby obey
ing the law that prohibits unseemly
noises from midnight to 5 a. m.

BULL FALLS INTO DITCH IN

EGG HARBOR, N. J. June 13.
While speeding on his motorcyle from
Atlantic City last evening, John Par
ker was charged by a bull. The. ma
chine was wrecked and the bull was
thrown into a ditch. Parker was not
seriously hurt.
GIRL FINDS STOLEN $2,500
WHILE WADING IN CREEK
NEW YORK June 13.—While wad
ing tn the Nepherhan creek in West
chester county, Fannie Aldrich, 16,
found a box containing $2,500, which
had been stolen from the paymaster of
the Catskill aqueduct.

BOSTON. June 13.—According to his
wife’s diary. Dr. Frederick S. Bennett
who is being sued for divorce, fined his
wife $1 every time she was saucy or
impertinent, and $5 every time she rea 1
her mother's letters.

The body of John P. Walker, Jr, 5
years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P.
Walker, of Union City, Ala., who died
in Atlanta last night, lies at the chapel

SEVEN HALF-DEAD SAILORS
TAKEN FROM SINKING SHIP
NEW ORLEANS. June 13.—Nearly
dead from exposure and starvation, the
seven members of the crew of the lum
ber schooner Hornet were picked up at
sea from their sinking craft and
brought here by the steamship Geiste
munde, which arrived today. The men
were picked up 50 miles off this port
just after their craft, became water
logged and began sinking.
