6 COMMITTEE FOES BOLTERS.SAS HODSEVELT Steam Roller Men Denounced for Methods California's Case Called Theft. OYSTF.R RAV June 13 Denounc ing the Taft contingent in the nations! committee which compos*■“ the steam roller as the real "bolters” of the part'.. Colonel Roosevelt stlnglnelv told his opinion of the last of th* < alifornia and Arizona contests for delegates in the committee yesterdav He said in part "I call special attention to the fact thnl the six Roosevelt delegates from Arizona are excluded by tlie national committee be* a use thev represent the people of Arizona, and the six Taft delegates are admitted because thev do not "Tn California the progressives ronld have obtained all the delegates with out resorting tn a primary The temp tation was very strong to take the dele '(rates without risking a primary "The legislature of California de creed that tn California., as in Oregon. South Dakota and North Dakota, the delegates should all he elected at large Ail parties and all factions acquiesced In the law. and the anppnrters of .three Republican candidates for president ! ,tnade a campaign throughout the state. If* Taft sent a special letter to t'ali flnrnia. which showed his entire ac egilesrence in the law. There were no candidates in the districts at all. and until after the primary was held there was not a suggestion made about the diatnict delegates. "After the primarv every decent man in California acquiesced, but a lieuten ant of Mr. Patrick Calhoun, the man whom Mr. Heney indicted, has made the- contest, and the national commit tee has actually seated two Taft-Cal hottn delegates from f’aJlfomia. Gov ernor Johnson has rightly said that it is an insult to the state of California to listen to Calhoun's representative in sue.h a case as this, and he refused to appear before the national committe.e, saying that he would not try the title of stolon property before the thief who stole it. Do Not Represent the Party. “Os these 37 national committeemen who thus robbed the immense majority Os the . Republicans of California of their rights four represent Ala'ka. Hawaii, the Philippine Islands and Porto Rico, who don't vote for the president at all. Twelve represent Democratic states, none of which voted for Mr. Taft at the last election. Then there come fourteen who represent the Republican states, every one of which has repudiated Mr. Taft at |he pri maries this spring, with the exception of Massachusetts, which, however, re pudiated Mr. Crane (committeeman). This makes a total of 30 out of the 37 Taft members of the national commit tee. There remain but seven men from Republican states, and of the seven states, in six no primaries were held this spring and the Republican voters had no chance to express their wishes. "It is they who are now irregnlar It is they who are now profoundly dis loyal. both to the Republican party and the causa of good citizenship They are bolting from the Republican party at thia moment. "I do not for one moment believe that the convention will ratify this ac tion by the national committee, for to do so would be to betray the cause of the people, to be false to the funda mental principles of good citizenship and of American democracy, and to wreck the Republican party." FACTS PROVE ABSURD CLAIMS MADE* TO 122 DELEGATES BY WILSON XX ISHINUToy, .lune 13. Their pa tienc exhausted by statements issued from the Wilson headquarters in which a lend in delegates is claimed over Speaker Clark, the Clark managers have made a close analy sis of the Wil son figure- The paper fetal of the N»w Jersey 'candidate Is reduced to 122 votes, leaving him with an utmost strength of 214 votes in the Baltimore convention The last figures Isned by the Wilson management claimed for him a total of 244 votes In the. Baltimore conven tion. The la-t figures Issued try the Wil son management claimed for him a to tal of 366 delegate and conceded 349 delegates to Clark. As a matter of fact Clark has a sure total of 490 delegates, as against 244 at the very utmost for Wilson. Following is the Clark analysis of the Wilson figures, state by state: "The table gives him 76 in Pennsyl vanla. when In fact he is certain of only 40. which is well known to all who are familiar w-lth the Pennsylva nia situation. "Wisconsin had preferential prima ries. Speaker Clark carried four dis tricts, which certainly gives him 3. Clark headquarters has positive infor mation Insuring the speaker nine votes st least from Wisconsin "The Wilson table claims all the Wis consin delegation of 24. Has No Votes in Ohio. "The table gives Wilson 19 in Ohio. The state convention lias instructed ths Ohio delegation to vote as a unit for Governor Harmon, so that those 19 votes should not be counted for Wil son. "There are eight Wilson men. or mon with loaning toward Wilson, In ths Michigan delegation, but It Is by no means certain that -they will vote for Wilson, as they are unlnstriicted. The Wilson table claims 15 In Michigan "There are but seven men In the Tennessee delegation who are not In favor of Speaker Clark Bight of the delegates are instructed for Clark and nine more pledged. The Wilson table, gives Wilson twelve In Tennessee. Gov ernor Wilson is not certain of receiv ing more than three or five votes in the Tennessee delegation. "The Wilson table counts fifteen from Virginia, where, In fact, there are but five men on the Virginia delegation who are friendly to the Wilson candida cy; but as the delegation is uninatruct ed, the action of this delegation Is in doubt. "In the Txnilsiana delegation there are 13 Clark men out of 20. The re mainder are divided between Wilson and Underwood. The Wilson tabic claims ten from Ixmislana raise Claims in Maine. "The Wilson table claims eight from Maine. Three of the members of the Maine delegation have a leaning to ward Governor Wilson. Bui as the del egation is uninstructed, its action Is in doubt. "The Wilson table counts New Hamp shire. A preference vote was taken in the New* Hampshire state convention, in which Speaker Clark received the A T/iwnrnwi Jhvwy nn n F The End of the School Year Ts apt to be a drag on many children, unless th*' mother is careful to supply the kind of fond to properh nourish their fast growing bodies and rapidly developing brains. "The Wilson figures count Utah with six which is without good reason. The, Utah delegates will undoubtedly fall in line with the rest of the West for Clark a* their delegation is the only uiiin.strui ted delegation west of th : Missouri river. "In Portfi Rl< o the latest informa tion is that the regular delegation.) backed by Conimltteaman D. H. Field,l Is for I'lark. This delegation is con tvsteri by 1 lie so-called Native Porto) Rican Democracy. which Instructed those delegates for Wilson. According to a floeision of file court in Porto Rico. It has been determined that the Field organization Is the regular party) in Porto Rico. A Claim That Is t_auahable. "The claim of two for Wilson in 1111 nols and one in Arizona Is laughable. Clark carried Illinois by 140.finn ma jority. and lie carried practically every) voting precinct in Arizona In preferen tial primaries ami hail a majority of about ten to one over Wilson in th*) state. There | s no ground for the claim of any delegates in either state for any* candidate except Clark. “The Wilson table counts two In West Virginia for Governor Harmon. Ignoring the action of the West Vlr-I gins state convention, which in structed its delegates In the entire stat* to vote for Clark and to vote on I all questions as a unit. "The Wilson table, by some feat of mathematical legerdemain. Ignores the I result of th* Massachusetts primaries. | and takes the 36 votes of that stale away from- Clark. Governor Foss is not a candidate and has repeatedly) stated that he Is not, according to our information, and the 36 votes of Massa chusetts will be cast, for Clark, who | earned the preferential primaries. "Speaker Clark received more votes In each congressional district and In the state at large than any delegate who had printed over his name a pledge for any other candidate. These votes Instructed delegates to vote for Speaker Clark. This Is the Real Standing. "The following «hows In a compara tive way the Wilson table and the ac tual strength of Wilson in the follow ing states: Actual Wilson Wilson table, strength, j Pennsylvania 76 40 Wisconsin 24 17 I Ohio 19 0 Michigan 16 S Tennessee 12 5 Virginia 15 Louisiana 10 7 Maine 8 3 New Hampshl* e 3 0 Delaware ... ...,. 6 1 Utah 6 0 Porto Ric' 6 0 Illinois 2 0 Arizona 1 0 | - I Total 208 86 | Discrepancy, 122. Subtracting this discrepancy from the Wilson claimed total of 366 leaves his utmost strength 244 votes, as against a certain 490 and a possible 510 for Speaker Clark to date.
