THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEW S. 18 Poultry, Pet and Live Stock. NotS~OF~THE POULTRY YARD Are your bens tame and quiet A . while you work /i«VZtc amons them : I' not. your treat- , ntent of them I'' 7'0171 through the win ter has been wrong, and you’ llis> ■woik with til,’ I'it setting hens ami the little chicks rj win h<> much / onitry harder in conse quence. A net - vous, wild hen is / jrif fnr very disagreeable to handle, and she teaches her chicks to be wild also. Watch the little chicks for head lice. These Hee kill more chicks every year than die from any other cause To prevent this, when taking the chicks from the nest where they were hatched, rub a little sweet oil or lard on the top of the head and around the bill. One of the most Important things in raring for the little chicks 1s to keep them supplied with plenty of fresh, . lean water. If they are allow ed to drink stale, dirty water they will surely have bowel trouble The breeding stock should be fed and compelled to exercise as the other laying hens are. This insures the fer tility of the ogg. and causes the chicks to be strong and healthy, which would not be the case If the breeders were al lowed to become overfat. More than three-fourths of an egg is composed of water, so you can see how necessary It is that the fowls should be kept supplied with an abundance of water. It should be pure, and given to them In some wav that they can not get It foul. Now is the time to got the start of the lice In the hen houses and sheds. The warm weather Is now upon us, when they will Increase very fast, and It is a good plan to kill all possible now. It will make the work easier l later on. Spray the houses and paint the roosts with a mixture of crude carbolic acid s.nd coal oil equal parts This will kill the vermin, and 1s also a good dis infectant Orpingtons.
