AGED HUSBAND DIES
SIX WEEKS AFTER HIS
WIFE PASSED AWAY
WAYCROSS. GA., .Tune 31.—The
body of J. C. Miles, whose death oc
curred at the home of Mrs. B. F. Hu
bert yesterday, was taken to Thomas
ville, where the funeral took place to
day. Mr. Mlles was 71 years old and
served in the Confederate army. Six
■weeks ago, while visiting a daughter in
Tifton, Mrs. Miles was taken ill and
died within a short time.
Mr. Miles’ death came from a stroke
of paralysis, which he suffered here
several days ago. Four daughters sur
vive. They are Mrs. B. F. Hubert and
Miss Mary' Miles, of Waycross; Mrs.
P. A. Workman, of Tifton, and Mrs. J.
M. Austin, of Meigs.
Women who bear children and re
main healthy are those who prepare
their systems tn advance of baby’s
coming. Unless the mother aids
nature in its pre-natal work the crisis
finds her system unequal to the de
mands made upon it, and she is often
left with weakened health or chronic
ailments. No remedy is so truly a
help to nature as Mother’s Friend,
end no expectant mother should fall
to use ft. It relieves the pain and
discomfort caused by the strain on
the ligaments, makes pliant and elas
tic those fibres and muscles which
nature is expanding, prevents numb
ness of limbs, and soothes the inflam
mation of breast glands. The system
being thus prepared by Mother’s
Friend dispels the fear that the crisis
may not be safely met. Mother's
Friend assures a speedy and complete
recovery for the mother, and she is
left a healthy woman to enjoy the
rearing of her

City Pension Plan.
Taxpayers who think their property
is assessed too high, as most of them
do. will have the right to make a pro
test and perhaps get action tn the fu
ture. The council, at its special meet
ing. passed the resolution calling for
an amendment to the city charter giv
ing citizens the right of appeal to the
tax committee. But it was adopted
only after earnest debate.
. The measure was proposed by Aider
man Candler, but it follows closely the
line of a recommendation in Mayor
Winn’s inaugural message. It provides
for a chief clerk in the tax office who
shall receive appeals from the de
cisions of the city tax assessors, lay
them before the tax committee and ar
range for a hearing at which all par
ties concerned may appear.
Alderman Hatcher opposed the meas
ure on the ground that the tax com
mittee, like all members of council,
would be elected by the people, usual
ly be candidates for re-election and
thus be subjected to great temptation
to please every' taxpayer with a vote
who made an appeal to them. Aider
men Chambers and Candler defended
the resolution, which was finally adopt
ed.
Given Deed To Lakewood.
The special session also adopted the
charter amendment deeding T.akewood
park to a. private corporation backed
by the Chamber of Commerce, with a
view to holding annual Industrial ex
positions. Aiderman Chambers said ho
believed the enhancement tn values in
the Lakewood section would make the
city realize a handsome, profit on the
expense Incurred.
The charter amendment enabling the
council to place 20-year employees on
the pension roll whether they desire it
or not was promptly defeated. There
was no debate, but Aiderman Hatcher’s
motion to table the resolution, was car
ried. Fear of political moves in bring
ing charges against old officials Is said
to have been the reason for its de
feat.
The resolution from the vice com
mission, giving the city right to regu
late rooming houses and refuse them
licenses under certain circumstances,
was adopted without debate.

RACES TO KEEP NEWS
OF FAMILY TRAGEDY
FROM SICK MOTHER
To prevent her sick mother, Mrs. E.
H. West, from learning the details of a
family tragedy tn which Charles E.
West is being held in New Orleans for
the killing of George Borden, Mrs. B. J.
Sells, 215 Courtland street, is hastening
to her mother's bedside in Magee, Ark.
When young West shot and killed his
brother-in-law, Borden, in New Or
leans two days ago his mother lay at
the point of death. Mrs. Sells decided
that news of the killing must be kept
from her If she was to live. So the
race with the report, which will travel
slowly in the Arkansas backwoods, be-,
gan today.
Shortly after the shooting West told
the authorities in New Orleans that he
killed Borden in self-defense while the
latter was advancing on him with a
knife. Borden, he said, had been drink
ing heavily and had abused his sister,
and Borden, in a dying statement to
the New Orleans police, asserted that
West shot without cause.
