THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. HEAD FOR PROFIT-GEORGiAN WAN I AU*>-USE FOR RESULTS
Poultry, Pet and Live Stock.
Notesofthe poultry yard
Are your hens
tame and quiet
while you work
among them? If
not, your treat
ment of them
through the win
ter has been
wrong, and your
work with the
setting liens and
the little chicks
will bo much
harder In conse
quence. A ner
vous, wild hen is
very disagreeable
to handle, and she
teaches her chicks to be wild also.
Watch the little chicks for head lice.
These lice kill more chicks every year
than dte from any other cause. To
prevent this, when taking the chicks
from the nest where they were hatched,
rub a little sweet oil or lard on the top
of the head and around the bill.
One of the most Important things in
aring for the little chicks Is to keep
them supplied with plenty of fresh,
clean water. If they are allowed to
drink stale, dirty water they will surely
have bowel trouble.
The breeding stock should he fed
and compelled to exercise as the other
laving hens are. This insures the fer
tility of the egg. and causes the chicks
to be strong and healthy, which would
not be the case if the breeders were al
lowed to become overfat.
More than three-fourths of an egg Is
composed of water, so you can see how
necessary It is that, the fowls should ho
kept supplied with an abundance of
water It should be pure, and given to
them In some way that they can not
got ft foul.
Now is the time to get the start of
the lice in the hen houses and sheds.
The warm weather Is now upon us,
when they will increase very fust, and
It is a good plan to kill all possible now.
It will make the work easier later on.
Spray the houses and paint the
roosts with a mixture of crude carbolic
acid and coal oil equal parts. This will
kill the vermin, and 1s also a good dis
infectant.
