ington. He stands a chance of being
sent to Washington. New York. West
Point or Texas, to fill one of the va
cancies for which appointments are to
be made.
Major General Wotherspoon's offief
is flooded with telegrams from all over
the country today congratulating the
popular officer on his promotion from
brigadier general to the highest rank
in the service. California. Washing
ton, D. C„ New York, Savannah and
other points where the officer has been
stationed during his 42 years of active
service and places where he has friends
were represented in the rrtass of tele
grams. Numbers of friends whom he
and his wife have made in Atlanta have
written notes and called them up over
the telephone to express their pleas
ure. •
Takes Place of General Grant.
The dispatch notifying General
Wotherspoon of his promotion came
from Washington yesterday as follows:

existed for some time. Genera! Woth
erspoon assumes the rank made vacant
by the death of General F. D. Grant.
MANAGER J?W. COUCH
OF OCEANIC HOTEL IS
ON VISIT TO ATLANTA
Jesse N. Couch, manager of the Oceanic
hotel at Wrightsville Beach, arrived in
Atlanta Tuesday morning and will remain
a guest of the Majestic until Thursday
night, when he leaves for Wrightsville
over the Seaboard Air Line with a large
party who will spend the summer at the
Oceanic hotel.
Mr. Couch Is bubbling over with en
thusiasm about his hotel and Wrightsville
Beach.
With Captain Oscar Salter in charge of
the private pier, the SO-foot launch and
boats, absolute safety is assured, for no
man knows the South Atlantic coast bet
ter than Captain Salter. He also knows
where the fishing is best.
Special rates will be given by the
Oceanic from August 15 to October 1. Mr.
Couch will be at the Majestic until
Thursday, where he will make reserva
tions or give any information desired.
NEGRO WOMAN AND
INFANT IN PERIL OF
DROWNING IN HOME
In a house at 73 Old Wheat street
the wife and new-born baby of Joe
Matthews are in danger of being
drowned in bed. Water has flooded the
•structure since the recent rains began.
Matthews, who is a negro porter em
ployed by the H. M. Ashe Company,
says he has appealed to the city In vain
attempts to have the sewers enlarged
so that they will carry off the water.
His wife and the two-day-old infant
are in such condition that they can not
leave the bed about which the water
from the street has swirled for several
days.
Matthews says that unless he can
find some way to drain off the flood
his family will die when another down
fall such as yesterday's descends. Yes
terday six pups in the house were
drowned.

of the Chamber of Commerce, and asked
him for the aid of that organization in
bringing the convention here
"The proposition to bring thia Roose
velt convention to Atlanta, ' said Mr.
Yates, ’’is meeting with a most hearty re
ceptlon The citizens of the town under
stand that if would mean thousands of
visitors and/would result in the biggest
single advertisement Atlanta ever had."
The other organizations formed about
Roosevelt's leadership have taken no ac
tion about the convention, preferring to
wait until the colonel himself expresses a
preference.

Tj. Alonzo Hines, one-of the best

Springs tomorrow- by members of the J.
C. Root Camp. No. 80. Woodmen of the
World. Music and dancing have been ar
ranged for, and a fine time is predicted.

young business men of Atlanta, has ac

What is believed by detectives to be
a dope joint and blind tiger, where
boys use -cocaine and drink w hisky, has
been uncovered by a raid on an up

Chestnut street, and A. J. Fitzgibbon,

before Recorder Broyles this afternoon
to tell of the mystdries of the room.
The raid was made as the result of
a complaint to Chief of Detectives Dan
ford by the son of a prominent Atlanta
man, whose name has been connected
With the place. This same young man
was a star witness a few days ago
against a downtown druggist who was
convicted of selling cocaine. He told
Judge Broyles at ttfat time that he
wanted to break up the sale of cocaine
in Atlanta In an effort to save himself
and others.
A lot of dope needier, as well as whis
ky, were found by detectives in the
room.
AUGUSTA’S $1,250,000
BOND ISSUE CARRIES
AUGUSTA, GA.. June 25 Augusta
voted $1,000,000 bonds for loveo purposes,
together with $150,000 fnr a city hospital
and SIOO,OOO for improved water works, in
a special bond election held here yester
day. A two-thirds vole was required and
the three issues carried by about 200 more
than a two-thirds majority of 2,400 ballots
cast, and 109 more than two-thirds of the
registered vote of the city.
