Advice brom the Poultry Doctor The normal tern perature of a hen is from 106 to 10” degrees and it docs not vary from this to any extent when she becomes broody Some are of the opinion that the temperature of the hen Inc re se g when she be comes broody, and that broodiness Is a sort of fever. This is not the case. To take the temperature of a hen a physician’s thermometer is inserted two inches up the vent. When a hen first becomes broody her body and breast are cov ered with feathers into which the eggs nestle and are protected from drafts of air. Just what temperature is trans mitted to the eggs it is difficult to de termine, as registering thermome ters attached to eggs have shown all sorts of temperatures from below 90 to 104, during the first week of incuba tion. At this time she covers the eggs very closely, and if left to herself will not go off the nest to feed for two or three days. Late; she becomes less at tentive and will leave Hie eggs, some times for half an hcijur at a time. The feathers on the under part of her body come out or ate picked off until th. eges come in direct contact with het hare flesh. This has been taken, by those practit ing artificial incubation, to indicate that the applied heat is in creased as the hatch progresses, but more likely It is for the purpose of ad mitting more air io the eggs, as the de veloping embryo requires more air as Incubation progresses. After about the first week of incu bation the hen will leave the eggs and remain off some time, often allowing them to become stone cold, with no ap parent detriment to the hatch. This i not because of any knowledge on her part that the eggs are less liable to Injury, but because sitting has be • nine an established thing, liens have been known to remain off in cold weather until the eggs were ruined. There Is no cause for belief that the hen lias any knowledge of the require ments of Incubation, or even the desire to bring forth chicks. The instinct to set possesses her and she will set as readily on an empty nest as on one full of eggs. She has the instinct to cover the eggs when she sets, but she lias this same instinct when on the nest to lay, as In this case a hen will draw every egg tn the nest under tier and perhaps turn them several times, so the turning of the egg is not with the idea that it will make thorn hatch. A hen may hatch out a full nest of chicks, but if you take them away from her and place eggs In the nest she will go on sitting .is contentedly as though she had never bad a chick. The motherly instinct eome« after 'he chicks are hatched. It does not come to all hens, as some will not own their ehi-ks, though this K exceptional. Nature pro vides all these different instincts at the right time A lien’s brain is too small to hold them all. She is a creature of one idea and sticks to it until another I more forcible presented This is ar. advantage to man and allows him to accomplish more with her than though rb< were possessed of greater knowl edge.
