THE SETTING HEN.
The normal tem
perature of a hen a ,
is from 106 to 107 (I'MICC
degrees find it
does not \ ary - . ,
from this to any 1"t'Ol'tl
extent, when she 1 '
becomes broody
Some are of the □ 1
opinion that the l!lt
tempi rature of the
hen increases r>
when she be- rOUttKV
conies broody, and
that broodiness is
a sort of fever / JfistnT
This is not the t-SVVlur
case. To take the
temperature of a hen a physician’s
thermometer Is inserted two inches up
the vent. When a hen first becomes
broody her body and brepst are cov
ered with feathers into which the eggs
nestle and are protected from drafts
of air. Just what temperature is trans
mitted to the eggs it is difficult to de
termine, as registering thermome
ters attached to eggs have shown all
sorts of temperatures from below 90
to 104, during the first week of incuba
tion. At this time she covers the eggs
very closely, and if left to herself will
not go off the nest to feed for two or
three days, l.atet she becomes less at
tentive and will leave the eggs, some
times for half an liosir at a time. The
feathers on the under part of her body
cotne out or are picked off until the
eggs come in direct contact with her
bare flesh. This has been taken, by
those practicing artificial incubation, to
indicate that the applied heat is in
creased as the hatch progresses, but
more likely It is for the purpose of ad
mitting more air to the eggs, as the de
eloping embryo requires more air as
incubation progresses.
After about the first week of incu
bation the hen will leave the eggs and
remain off some time, often allowing
litem io become stone cold, with no ap
parent detriment Io the hatch. This .
is not because of any knowledge on
her part that the eggs are less liable
to injury, but because sitting has be
come an established tiling Hens have
been known to remain off tn cold
weather until the eggs were ruined.
There is no cause for belief that the
lien has any know ledge of the require
ments of incubation, or even the desire
to bring forth chicks. The instinct to
set possesses her and she will set as
readily on an ernpt.v nest as on one full
of eggs. She has the instinct to cover
the eggs when she sets, but she has 1
this same instinct when on the nest
to lay, as In tills case a hen will draw !
every egg In the nest under her and
perhaps turn them several times, so the ,
turning of the egg is not with the idea
that it will make them hatch. A hen
may hatch out a full nest of chicks,
but If you take them away from her and
place eggs in the nest she will go on
sitting as contentedly as though she '
had never had a chick. The motherly
instinct comes after the chicks are
hatched. It does not come to all hens,
as some will not own their chicks,
though this Is exceptional. Nature pro
tides all these different instincts at the ■
right time. A hen’s brain is too small
to hold them all. She Is a creature of
one idea and sticks to it until another
is more forcibly presented. This Is at.
advantage to man and allows him to
accomplish more with her than though
she were possessed of greater knowl
edge,
