The normal tem perature of a hen a Is from 106 to 107 Advice degrees and it does not varv . , from this to any extent when she * z becomes broody Some are of the opinion that the Irlt. temperature of the I hen inc re uses r j j when she be- comes broody, and that broodiness Is a sort of fever IjOCtOT This Is not the case. To take the temperature of a hen a physician's thermometer is inserted two inches up the vent. When a hen first becomes broody her body and breast are cov ered with feathers into which the eggs nestle and are protected from drafts of air Just what temperature is trans mitted to tin? eggs It Is difficult to de termine. as registering thermome ters attached to eggs have shown all sorts of temperatures from below 90 to 104. during the first week of incuba tion. At this lime she covers the eggs very closely, and if left to lifrself will not go off the nest to feed for two or three days. Late, site becomes less at - tentive and will leave the eggs, some times for half an hojii at a time. The feathers on the under part of her body come out or are picked off until the op-o-s come in direct contact with her hare flesh. This has been taken, by those practicing artificial incubation, to indicate that the applied heat is in creased as the hatch progresses, but more likely it is for the purpose of ad mitting more air to the eggs, as the de veloping embiyo requires rriore air as incubation progresses. After about the first week of incu bation the hen will leave the eggs and remain I.lf some time, often allowing ’ them to become stone cold, with no ap , paten', detriment to the hatch. This is not because of any knowledge on : her part that the eggs are less Hable io injury, but because sitting has be i come an established thing. Hens have ■ been known to remain off m cold weather until the eggs were ruined. There is no cause for belief that the hen has any knowledge of the r -quire ments of Incubation or even the desire to bring forth chicks. The instinct to set possesses her and she will set as readily on an empty nest as on one full of eggs. She has the instinct to cover the eggs when she sets, but she has this same instinct when on the nest to lay, as in this case a hen will draw every egg in the nest under her and perhaps turn them several limes, so the turning of the egg Is not with the idea that it will make them hatch. A may hatch out a full nest of chicks, but if you take them away from ■het and place eggs in the nest she will go on sitting as contentedly as though she had never had a chick. The motherly instint t comes after the chicks are hatched. It does not come to all hens, as some will not own thole chicks, though this is exceptional. Nature pro vides all these different instincts at the right time A hen's brain is too small to hold them all. She is a creature of one idea and sticks to It until another is more forcibly presented This Is at. advantage to man and allows him to accomplish more with her than though she were possessed of greater knowl edge.
