MAYOR ANSWERS
accusations of
E.P.INSLEY
I
Blames Rains for Condition of
Streets and Defends Sewer
Improvement Work.
"It is true that Atlanta s streets are
in a deplorable condition," said Mayor
Courtland S. Winn today In replying
to the charges which Edwin P. Ansley
makes’the basis for his demand for a
business men's municipal ticket.
"I am free to admit that the thor
oughfares of Atlanta are in as bad a
condition as they have been in years.
But Mr. Ansley can not reasonably lay
the blame upon C ity Engineer Clayton
for neither Captain Clayton nor any
other human being is responsible. The
recent torrential rains which have fal
len in Atlanta were the act of Provi
dence. No city administration could
prevent them or the unfortunate dam
age they have done. Mr Ansley should
realize that before he makes such
charges,
"He says that the administration Is
neglecting its sewers but the fact is
sewer extension is going forward in
Atlanta as rapidly as is possible, and
this administration Is looking ahead
and building for the future as well as
tor the present. It can not contend
against the deluges of Providence, but
It has no excuses or explanations to
make."
Mum on His Candidacy.
Mayor Winn’s reply to the. direct
question as to his reported candidacy
for the mayoralty nomination was
neither an affirmative nor a negative,
though he agreed that it was generally
understood among his friends that he
Is going to run. Some of his advisors
declared that if there had been anj’
recent doubt about the mayor's re
nomination they had been dispelled by
the very threats of his opponents to put
a "business men's anti-polltlcal ticket"
in the field.
"If Mr. Ansley is going to enter mu
nicipal politics,” said the mayor, "he
| or anybody else will be welcomed ac
: voiding to their efficiency. This city
deserves the best administration any
Lind all of Its citizens can give it. Per
sonally, 1 will vote as I always have, for
; the best men for every office. As to
I Mr. Chambers’ candidacy for the may
. oralty I know nothing about it, and
can not discuss it and all I will say
about the fight that may come l over
the purchase of the garbage disposal
plant is that we have contracted for
that plant and we have no excuses to
make for its purchase.” i
In raising this Issue of the garbage
disposal plant the anti-administration
contenders are asserting the city has
paid a cool SIOO,OOO more for the plant
than did other cities where the power
for the city’s lights Is generated with
but cost by the garbage plant itself.
Answers For Clayton.
Captain Clayton, the man against
whom the principal shafts of Mr. Ans
ley’s criticism are directed, is 111 and
away from town, so he could make no
answer to the accusations. But the
mayor took up cudgels in his behalf.
"Captain Clayton is not an inefficient
officer," Mr. Winn said, "and his de
partment Is not giving inefficient ser
vice. Moreover, there Is not an epi
-1 demlc of typhoid fever, nor of any
other contagious disease In Atlanta.
What trouble there Is with the city
streets is not the administration s fault,
nor is it peculiar to Atlanta as the
statement would have the people be
lieve. All Southern cities have suf
fered from the torrential rains. The
health of none of them has suffered
less than Atlanta's. The condition of
their streets Is in no case less aggra-
I vated than here."

0.0.0. SKIN DISEASES
The cause of all skin diseases can be traced to straw humor or acid in
. the blood; the cuticle is always healthy where the circulation is free from
' impurities. When the blood is infected with acrid or unhealthy matter it
cannot perform its natural work of nourishing the skin, regulating its tem
perature and preserving' its normal softness, pliability and healthfulness.
Instead It Irritates and inflames the delicate fibres and tissues around the
pores and glands and produces some of the many forms of skin disease. 1
The itching and stinging so often accompanying skin affections are produced .
by the deposit from the blood of the acrid humors with which it is filled,,
Into the sensitive membranous flesh lying just beneath the outer covering, i
and surrounding the countless nerves, pores and glands. This explains why i
scratching the outer skin affords no relief from the itching and burning.l
. 6. S. S. cures Skin Diseases of every character by purifying the blood. It
goes down into the circulation and removes the humors or acids which are
causing the trouble, builds up the weak, acrid blood, and permanently cures
every variety of skin affection. Local applications can only soothe; they,
never cure because they do not reach the blood, g. S. S. goes right Into the
circulation, reaches the trouble and cures it by removing the cause. Book
on Skin Diseases and any medical advice free to all who write.
