June 28.—Two old line industrial life companies in Rome the Rome Life and the Cherokee Life have just consolidated their business, | which will be conducted in the future by the Cherokee Life Insurance Com pany. This Is the largest merger of In surance interests ever effected in the South, the combined business repre senting the establishment of the first life company writing an Industrial busi ness of large proportions south of Vir ginia Officials of the Cherokee Life say the company now has outstanding about sls.no.non of insuran'e. repre senting a merger of s'>.non non of In surance of the Rome Life and about Jgnnn.nnn of insurance of the Cherokee Life The combined industrial debits, according to the officers, give to the Cherokee Life an annual premium In come of li.V'.nnn. and its net surplus to policyholders, by a consolidation of the assets of the two companies, now amounts to more than s".nn,nnn Rth companies recently- created ordi nary life departments and the ordinary as well as the industrial business is brought together. The Cherokee Life will continue tn operate both ordinary and industrial departments, seeking to reduce the relative fixed charges of the business by selling both lines of life insurance under the one adminfstra-< tlon. Merger Urged by Expert. The absorption of the Rome Life by the Cherogee Life was effected after a thorough investigation by and on the recommendation of Miles M Dawson, consulting actuary of New York, who was retained by both companies to bring about a merger of interests in an equitable manner. On the opinion of .Mr. Dawson as well ns on the opin ion of the managers of both companies, the combination of Interests will make for greater and more rapid profit for all Interests by lhe elimination of com petition between these two larger in dustrial companies and by drastic eeo. , nomics effected by administering the I larger volume of business at substan- j tially the same fixed charge W. \V. The Duke of Miselmeri, or Raoul Bonanno, as he prefers to be called, h'as given evidence of baritone brillian cy In Atlanta. He. recently appeared at a concert, given at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Slaton. It was due to the urging of his friends here that he 'consenvd to sing at a public concert. Bonanno will sing "Ebreo," Appo loni: "Good-Bye." Tosti; “l'n Ballo di Maschera," Verdi, and "Ernanl," Verdi. The concert w ill begin at 4 o’clock. ROAD SETTLES 35 DAMAGE CLAIMS FROM DALTON WRECK CALHoVK, Gzi.. .rune 28.—The West ern and Atlantic Railroad company has settled .15 claims growing out of the re cent wreck of the Calhoun picnic train near Dalton. All of these claims are for small amounts, ranging from $25 to S6OO The larger claims can not be settled, owing to the doubtful and convalescent state nf the injured. The local bar resents the action of sev eral lawyers from other places who have come here and endeavored to persuade people to file suits against the railroad company for damages. The Calhoun News has published an article denouncing the outsiders and charging that their efforts are "In violation of section 33 of the criminal code, and against the ethics of the profession."
