if the growth be arrested or retarded
in any way the germ will die and the
egg, therefor,, will not hatch Let us
sc just ho.', far nature will bear out
this, theory, writes Editor Trafford, In
■‘Poultry Success.''
In order to test out the matter to our
own satisfaction, we once allowed a
certain very choice breeding hen of
ours to lay her own clutch of eggs and
incubate them. Her laying extended
over a period of something like three
weeks before th" clutch of eggs was
laid and she began to set in earnest.
The point Is here, the first egg of the
clutch was about three weeks old be
fore the incubating was begun in ear
nest and had at various times during
that period been set on and Its tem-
P' ature raised to that of the hen,
which would be sufficient to start the
grow Hi of the germ. What is true of
the first egg laid is also true of the sec
ond, third, fourth and the entire clutch,
but In a reduved degree so far as num
bet of days are concerned. This hen
hatched every egg. and every chick was
the veiy picture of health.
I'Teqiient ly eggs laid hy a breefling
pen ar> set on by broody hens for hours
and hours before they are gathered, and
yet such eggs usually hat ’h well.
Nature seems to have placed in and
about th" egg of btrdw and fowls special
protection. This is proven by careful
tests.
