Tile Belgian t’ainpiiie was admitted ■ to The American Standard in 1893, byt | apparently on a<count of lack of inter i ost was dropped in 189 X. "I'he reason | now given for this by those interested i- that, at that time, birds imported from their native Belgium were too small, and far below tin- American ideal as to plunuige and fancy points, ami the Americans didn't have the pa tience to breed them up. Belgian t'atnplnes have been bred for many generations for the production of eggs, regardless of style of feathers. The hens are non-setters, mature early and begin to lay young. The climate of their native country is very trying, hence it has developed a hardy fowl. They are always classed as among the best layers known. There are two varieties - Silver and Golden. The Silvi - lay large white eggs, bill the Goldens lay tinted eggs. To produce eggs and lots of them is the mission of the Campine. The pure Belgian Carnpine Is the product of centuries of breeding on the dry . sandy plains-of 1 .aGa niplne, where natural ionc::ioiis necessitate a con stant hustle for existence, hence the resultant small, active bird. These were lite birds lhat were brought to this country in the last century. The ’•New” or "Improved" Campine has been dressed In more attractive feath ers and Increased In size, possibly by the admixture of Braekel blood. The latter breed Is said to have been of the same blood originally, but through be ing raised un the more fertile soil of Elatnlers the birds attained a larger size. The Braekels bear- a striking re semblance to ihe Cainpines, hut are larger, coarser and lack the trim ap pearance. The English type of Canj ptne is said to be about tin size of the I Belgian Braekel 'l'he breed Is not especially recom meHded for market purposes, thougli the rhicktr are said Io be very plump and excellent as br-oilers. The flesh of the mature birds Is delicious. In size, style ami general appearance, aside from its differently colored . lollies, the Improved Campine is much like the Leghorn, but II is said to dis iribute Its egg product more evenly t tiroiighoiit the year. nnr breeder claims that 'hi’ eggs average 27 to 30 ouin’.'S to the dozen, "or more." and that flocks miage 175 to 200 eggs 0.1, Il hl :i«r. i-ons.'i utlve day s.” We are told of 'lndividual yields of 250 be ing reported.” The throe chief points which are given ns commending the breed are size of egg. number of eggs laid and hardiness. 'rhe color of the Improved Silver I’ampini is described as "a silvery white ground, overlaid by markings or barrings of black having a rich beetle green sheen, exeepl the neck hackle, whirl! is a silvery white without bar rings. Tlie dark barrings are much wider than the white bars." The Silver Campines have a very grai i«Tul carriage, and with their pretty in irking and bright red single combs, make very attractive birds. The eyes are nearly black, the logs a leaden blue and the skin white. The t’ampines are said Io breed very true to color and type, without resorting to double mat ing. Their breeders iclalm that they are small -feeders an important point In those days of high prices. R. I. Reds I'i H’ R pullets and rooster, will lay early in fall. $5; clio<’olate colored brand.
