the germ will start to grow, and that
if the growth be arrested or retarded
In any way lhe germ will die and the
egg, therefore, will not hatch. Let us
see just how far nature will bear out
ibis theory, writes Editor Trafford, In
Poultry Success.”
In order to test out the matter to our
own satisfaction, we once allowed a
certain very choice breeding hen of
ours to lay her own clutch of eggs and
incubate ihetn. Her laying extended
over a period of something like three
weeks before the clutch of eggs was
laid and she began Io set in aarnest.
The point is here, the first egg of the
clutch was about three weeks old be
fore the Incubating was begun in ear
nest and had at various times during
that period been set on and its tem
perature raised to that of the hen.
which would be sufficient to start lhe
growth of the germ. What is true of
the first egg laid is also true of the sec
ond, third, fourth and the entire clutch,
but in a reduced degree so far as num
bet of days are concerned. This hen
hatched every egg. and every chick was
the very picture of health.
Frequently eggs laid by a breeding
pen are set on by broody hens for hours
and houts before they are gathered, and
yet such eggs usually hatch well
Nature seems Io have placed in and
about the egg of bird*, and fowls special
protection. This is proven by careful
tests.
