POLICE PREVENT
FIGHTINCOUNGIL
Rome Business Man and Mayor
Engage in Wordy Scrap Over
Meter Contract.
ROME, GA., July 9. Police were
called to prevent a fight last night in
city council between Mayor Ben
Yancey and Mortimer Griffin, a prom
inent business man of Rome when
charges were made by the latter that
insubordinate employees of the city had
been subsidized by a meter company.
During the word-dash between Yan
cey and Griffin some one yelled for the
"police,” and the chief of police and a
fellow officers rushed to the council
chamber. Until the affair wa* stopped
by an executive session of city coun

the beligerents. who it seemed were
destined to clash.
. When Griffin said "If .you were out
side this hall I would tell you what you
are" everybody expected a. fight, but it
was at this instant that the police ar
rived.
The row resulted from the adoption
of certain meters by the hoard of pub
lic work-, of which Mayor Yancey Is
a member. Griffin, who represented a
meter company, claimed that he was
not given a square deal; that the city
had planned to adopt a meter that a
.South Carolina city had purchased for
almost two dollars less than they had
offered it to Rome.
"Your former superintendent was
paid by a meter company to go up
North and Inspect its meter and was to
receive a bounty of $1 on each meter
sold. This company has a reputation
for subsidizing city employees. Its
product was recommended by Fred
Hanson, your plumbing inspector, and
your superintendent, A. V, Walton."
These remarks brought Mayor Yan-

ELECTRICITY CAUSES
PEAS TO THRIVE IN
SPITE OF A DROUTH
NEW YORK, July B.—Jacob Popkins,
of Pleasantville. N. J., says he has dem
onstrated to his own satisfaction that
electricity stimulates plant life. He
applied the test a few days ago to a
row of peas in his garden. The result."
have been extraordinary. The indica
tions are that under the influence of the
electric current the vegetables will be
ready for the table as early as usual,
notwithstanding the tardy spring and
the red-hot dry spell.
Popkins iaan amateur electrician. One
day he looked over the peas, above
which he had stretched two lines of
iron wire to furnish them a hold when
their stalks reached high enough.
It occurred to him that there was a
chance for a test. So he rigged, a dry
battery and when the stalks began to
lean against the lower wire he connect
ed it. Within a few days the plants
showed unusual vigor and began to
grow rapidly.

cey and Hanson to their feet. Yan
cey upheld the integrity of Hanson and
the latter denied that he had ever re
ceived a cent from the meter people.
During the argument Griffin shook his
fist at the mayor and exclaimed:
"You couldn't sell the city fire in
surance legitimately!"
"You will have that to take back,"
shouted the mayor.

Hundreds of Tired Atlanta

There is more fun to the square inch

judge from the noise the youngsters
make. The amount of fun may usually
be gauged by the noise, too, for the
kids say there’s no use playing unless

every afternoon. There is a bit of
shelter close to every little park and
the kiddles stick to the chutes and the

Then when the rain is over they hurry
back to their fun.
