Health Authorities Take Steps
to Prevent Entry of Bubonic
Plague From Islands.
SAVANNAH, GA., July 9ln order

tuted for the total extermination of the

the Atlantic and gulf ports of the ro
dents.
In any event, the city health de
partment states that the rats in Sa
vannah are doomed. The plague will
not be allowed to enter the United
States through this port, if it is possi
ble to prevent it.
Telegraphic instructions have been
received by Assistant Surgeon C. M.
Eountleroy, officer in charge of the
marine hospital service, directing that
precautions be taken against the im
portation of plague from Cuban and
Porto Rican ports.
“We have been notified to take spe
cial precautions,” said Dr. Fountleroy,
“and shall follow rigidly the require
ments of the United States army regu
lations regarding the examination of
-hii'S from plague ports. This includes
the careful examination of al) persons,
passengers, officers and crew of all
ships as to general physical conditions
Ships from plague ports are required
to be fumigated for rats and cleansed
of possible disease from keel to cap
tain's quarters every six months, and
In cases where this has not been done
we shall, of course, do the fumigating
here.”
Bounty on Rodents.
MOBILE. ALA.. July 9. —Fearful of
the bubonic plague now raging in Cuba
and Porto Rico and upon the theory
that It is spread more by the rodent
than any other agent, officers of the
port of Mobile have instituted rigid
precautionary measures. Not only wilf
vessels from Cuban and Porto Rican
ports be prohibited from docking with
in the limits of the port, but they will

CHIHUAHUA REBELS
EL PASO, TEXAS, July 9.—Disre
garding a recent proclamation in which
he promised amnesty to all rebels who
would lay down their arms. General
Heurta, federal commander, has been
executing revolutionists by the whole
sale since driving the rebels from Chi
huahua city, whicfi his forces are oc
cupying.
The news was confirmed today from
Mexico City. The editor of El Monitor,
a rebel paper, published in Chihuahua,
is among those reported executed. Some
of the other victims were among the
police whom Orozcp left behind to
guard the city and prevent looting un
til the federate could come. These
Huerta promised to treat as neutrals.
He lias also executed some of the men
who worked for Orozco as telegraph
operators.
Last night Antonio Rojas and his
command left Juarez. There had teen
much fear for the safety of the city
as long as they remained, for Rojas
is the commander who looted the Jua
rez bank a few months ago and later
defied Orozco, his commander.
BURGLAR GANG ROUNDSD UP.
MACON. GA.. July 9.—Five negro
burglars told the recorder of fully
fifteen burglaries committed by them in
the suburban residential districts dur
ing the last month. One of their
number, caught in the act. turned
state’s evidence. All were given two
months on the chaingang for loitering
and bound over to superior court for
burglary.

Benjamin Pierce, attorneys for J. Ed
ward Brazell, charged w ith killing Car.

to the supreme court. Brazell was sen
tenced to be hanged on May 23. but the
attorneys at that time asked for a new
trial, which was refused.

EARTHQUAKE SHOCK
DOES WIDE DAMAGE
TO ALASKA MINING
FAIRBANKS. ALASKA. July 9.—One
man is dead and considerable damage has
been done to mines throughout this sec
tion of Alaska by an earthquake shock,
according to reports received here to
day. The shock occurred Saturday night
and lasted for forty seconds. It Is the
most violent ever known here. Chimneys
Were knocked down and the quake caused
slides in a number of mines. Louis An
derson, foreman of a mine at Dome Creek,
was caught under a slide and suffocated.
GEORGIA ROAD FILES
MORTGAGE IN ALABAMA
MONTGOMERY. ALA., July 9.—The
Valdosta. Fort Gaines and Montgomery
Railroad Company has tiled a mortgage of
$4,600,000 to the Standard Trust Company
to secure an issue of bonds. The instru
ment was recorded in the office of Pro
bate Judge J. B. Gaston here.
The mortgage is on all railroad property
owneil by the mortgager. The railroad
has acquired the Montgomery Eastern
Railroad Company and will operate it in
connection with a line 42 miles long be
tween Valdosta and Fort Gaines. Ga.
The tax on the mortgage was S4OO.

NEW YORK, July 9. —Despite a re
ward of SI,OOO offered for information
leading to the arrest and conviction of
the "Ripper” who mutilated and killed
twelve-year-old Julia Connors, the po
lice were today no neater a solution of
the mystery surrounding the crime
and disappearance of the slayer.
That the murderer may have had
another victim was indicated today
when the detectives found in the box
in which little Julia was placed to die a
pair of shoes and an undergarment
not belonging to the Connors child.
The police were deceived for 4S hours
by the conflicting statements made by
Florence Molz. chum of Julia Connors.
She finally confessed she had been
romancing about seeing a man drag
away her little friend and as a result
all suspects arrested because of her
stories have been released.
The. detectives had to start all over
again today and admitted they were at
sea as to any definite clew.
