occupation which
I would incti-asc the
: ptofits of th. ii p’atsts without undue
(additional labor. So it' is that many
I poultry taiso's. both farmers and fan
j clots, are interested in what will make
j a suitable combination with the poui-
I 1 ry business.
To our mind no com bi nation is mote
. suitable or t.r, fitable than that of small
1 f ttits and poultry. The fancier will
: find this combination will utilize his
i small amount of land profitably an.,
ialso that it will thrive with a smaller
' amount of extra time after the siart
tha.n any other eotnbin ttion.
But it Is to the farmer that we
1 would mo.Mi heartily commend the
combination of small fruits and pottl
'try. Tlte farmer usually has no need
>0 economize land most farmers have
i land to spate. Theft great economy
must be in labor, for in tpaav parts of
the countix faint laborers fft-e becom
ing s'i -?aiee that the carlying on of
la ga farms is becotning impossible. In
many localities the farmer must con
line himself to what he and his family
can do unaided. The young and
string faitmt can stand the work of
dairying and kindred fitr/n operations
for a while, but no one can work ex
cessively for a great length of time.
This, pe haps, is tin- reason why farm
ers are turninp to poultry raising with
molt' interest than they have been
wont to manifest. To the farmer who
must depend upon what he can do
himself, poultry and small fruits pre
sent an excellent combination.
The farmer is vitally concerned with
the upkeep of ills farm. If obliged to
give up dairying for lack of help, his
fields will suffer the deprivation of
large luantltles „f stable fertilizer and
will in consequence "run down.” This
leads to the so-called abandoned farm.
The farmer Is not easily led to see In
poultry a solution of this difficulty,
until he has made a practice of hus
banding th, poultry fertilizer, of care
fully Jfctbining it with preservatfvt
minera”fertillzors, and then he is as- 1,
tonlshed nt Its bulk and its fertilizing
talite. This Is by far the best.fertilizer
that can lw used for the growing of
fruit-, so that in tltis respect alsc, pou!
lit and fruits form a natural combina
tion. It Is doubtful If so great a reve
nue from tile fertilizer could be ob
tained in any other wav than by ap
plying it to fruits.
It may be contended that this will
not soLve the difficulty of the upkeep
of a hunt! 1 .'il-ttei e farm since only (ilia
part could be devoted to small fruits
for which a market could be obtained,
and in some localities that would not
be a large amount. Personally we
think that a large part of many farms
might profitably be set out to tree
fruits, especially the apple. Their
p’ "ducts may be shipped and most sec
tions of the country could well increase
their output of apples and other tree
fruits. Furthermore, the market can
bo di veloped, for ft mav he noted that
in< teased production of fine fruit has a
j tenilency to increase tthe consumption
of fruit. Drillers tell us that there is
seldom ;t surplus of products of high
quality.
