"fresh" eggs that
the best purchasers are the people of
moderate means, 'rhe following inci
dent is related by the proprietor of the
Aurora Leghorn farm:
"Hello, hello! Is this the Aurora
chicken farm?" came the question
in a querulous female voice over
the 'phone one morning in early
December.
"Yes. this is the Aurora Leghorn
farm.” I replied in that patient kind
of tone 1 have learned to use at that
season of the year.
"How much are your best eggs
your very best. 1 mean."
"We haven't any best or ven
best." 1 replied.
'AX hat!!! Why I thought you
" ere a chicken farm.”
"We are, and that's wh\ we
haven t any very best eggs—only
dealers have different grades of
eggs. Ours are all alike, just real
fresh eggs, the kind you can't buv
in the stores."
"Oh! I'm so glad. I haven't bad
a decent egg. fit to eat this winter,
and one of my friends "as telling
me "hat perfectly lovely eggs she
g“ts from your farm, so 1 thought
I would call you up. How much
are your eggs?"
"Sixty-five cents." I replied.
"Sixty-five cents!! I never heard
of such a thing! My grocer sells
strictly fresh eggs at 42 cents, and
he says he "ill guarantee ever'
one."
"Do you know what the wholesale
price is today of a really fresh
egg?" I asked her. "It is just 6»>
cents, so I don't imagine your gro
cer can give you even a respectable
storage egg at 42 cents."
"Well." she responded very re
luctantly, “perhaps not."
"5 ou called us up," 1 reminded
het. "because you hadn't gotten a
decent egg. one fit to eat. for some
weeks."
"Yes. I know, but I thought be
cause you w ere a farm that I could
get them cheaper. Why last sum
mer when I was away in the coun
try- we got lhe fines* eggs for 25
cents a dozen. Well, you might
send me over half a dozen and I'll
try them."
I exp’atned that we did not de
liver half dozens, and as she was
twelve miles away from us. we
could not send any, having no trade
in her section. Could she get any
if she came tn the farm? Yes. she
•ottid.
Later site drew up in a $7,000
limousine, wearing a Safin fur coat
anti paid 33 cents —most grudging
ly—for six eggs, out of a gold chain
purse. She then gave her chauffeur
the address of a fashionable hair
dresser and 1 knew why the fresh
eggs. One must have a fresh egg
for shampooing; but a cold storage
egg will have to do for the tgble.
Things are getting so high that we
simply must economize!
The uninitiated seem to think
that wealthy people are an excel
lent market for fresh eggs. It is
rather the contrary. They are not.
Posslbl.v it is because they have so
many servants to feed.
