ATLANTACLERGY I DIVIDED 0N HELL I Three Pastors Believe in Fire; and Brimstone—Two Think Punishment Spiritual. Is there a hell? Three Atlanta ministers in answer to the opinion advanced bv the Inter national Bible Students association in session at Washington that the place was a myth and unscriptura 1. give an unqualified "yes.” Two othei= and all five "ere of different denomination—declare ’hat eternal punishment is not in keeping with proper ideas of a Just God and such punishment as exists is only for the purpose of cleansing and purifying The 4.000 members of the Interna tional Bible Students association re pudiated the "hole idea. The "fire, brimstone and hell theory was driving thousands to skepticism if not Infidel ity," they declared. 'lf there is not a hell,” said Dr. Charles W Daniel, of the First Baptist church, when told of this, "there ought to he." The idea of hell.” said Rabbi Marx. "Is not consistent with that of a just God. There is g difference between correctional punishment and brutal punishment.” Roth agree, however, that there ex ists some kind of punishment Five Give Their Opinion. Here are th« opinions of the five At lanta ministers who were questioned on the subject. Dr. W. W. Memminger. pastor of All Saints Episcopal church: "I have stated my beliefs to mv con gregation. I do not believe in fire and brimstone, but I believe that to the sinful will fall a spiritual punish ment infinitely more severe. This, however, will be a medium-—a sort of cleansing fire which will blast and purge the soul of iniquity and prepare it for a supreme state of godliness." Rabbi David Marx, of the temple: The idea of hell Is not consistent nd th that of a just God. I believe in no hell, but believe in a punishment designed to correct and purify.” Still Believes in Bible. Dr. Richard Orme Flinn, pastor of North Avenue Presbyterian church: "I have not yet revised my Bible. I still believe in Its teachings. I do not say that there is a physical fire and brimstone, but I believe that the fig ure of speech has a tremendous mean png—one that I wish to avoid and help ■others to avoid. The International Bible Students association is a school of radicals and its action brings no sur prise." Dr. S. R Belk, pastor of Park Street Methodist church: "I believe in the Bible as the revela tion of the word of God. My church is founded on the Bible and I am thor oughly orthodox. I believe in eternal punishment." Dr. <’harles W. Daniel,, pastor of First Baptist church: "If there is not a hell there ought to be one. I believe what the Bible teaches—that there is a hell, an eternal hell, and It is no myth.” HIS BET ON RAIN BRINGS BANKER A $30,000 HOME OKLAHOMA CITY. 0K1,A.. July 11. There are mighty few men in the world who would stake their fortune, or the greater portion of It at least, against the uncertainty of its raining. But that is what Daniel W.’ Hogan, president of the Farmers National bank of Okla homa City, did last year. As the result, he has commenced the erection of a $30,000 residence In the exclusive sec tion of the capital city. When the glooms came riding down upon dust clouds and the burning sun of July and August turned the pasture a crisp, lifeless brown last year, Okla homa farmers were forced to sell their live stock. Daniel Hogan, banker and | capitalist, saw his chance. He bought i cattle. He mortgaged those and bought | more cattle. No rain came and It looked mighty bad for Hogan. When it seemed that the crash "as inevitable, the rain came Hogan not only saved himself from the I shoals, but when he sold his cattle he was many thousand dollars "to the good." What Makes a Woman?
