occupation which
would increase the
profits of their plants without undue
additional labor. So It is that many
poultry raisers, both farmers and fan
ciers, are interested in what will make
a suitable combination with the poul
try business.
To our mind no combination is more
suitable or profitable than that of small
fi tilts and poultry . The fancier Will
find thia combination will utilize Ills
small amount of land - profitably ana
also that It will thrive with a smaller
amount of extra time after the start
than any other combination.
But It is to the farmer that we
would most heartily commend the
ombiriatfon of small fruits and poul
try The farmer usually lias no need
to economize land—-most fatrners have
land to spare. Their great economy
must be in labor, for in many parts of
tlie country farm laborers are becom
ing so scarce that the carrying on of
Huge farms is •becoming impossible. In
many localities the farmer must con
fine himself to what he and his family
can do unaided. The young and
strong farmer can stand the work of
dairying and kindred farm operations
for a while, but no one can work ex
cessively for a great length of time.
This, perhaps, is the reason why farm
ers are turning to poultry raising with
more Interest than they have been
wont to manifest. To the farmer who
must depend upon what he can do
himself, poultry and small fruits pre
sent an excellent combination.
The farmer is vitally concerned with
the upkeep of his farm. If obliged to
give up dairying for lack of help, his
Holds will suffer the deprivation of
large quantities of stable fertilizer and
will in consequence •’run down.” This
leads to the so-called abandoned farm.
The farmer is not easily led to see in
poultry a solution of this difficulty,
until he has made a practice of hus
banding the poultry fertilizer, of care
fully combining It with preservative
mineral fertilizers, and then he Is as
tonished at its bulk and its fertilizing
value. This is by far the best fertilizer
that can be used for the growing of
fruits, so that, in tills respect also, poul
try and fruits form a natural combina
tion. It is doubtful if so great a reve
nue from the fertilizer could be ob
tained in any other way than by ap
plying it to fruits.
It may be contended that this will
not solve the difficulty of the upkeep
of .1 humlred-acre farm since only tiha
part could be devoted to small fruits
for which a market could be obtained,
and in some localities that would not
be u large amount. Personally we
think that a. large part of many farms
miglit profitably lie set out to tree
fruits, especially the apple.. Their
products may be shipped and most sec
tions of the country could well inenease
their output of apples and other tree
fruits. Furthermore, the market can
lie developed, for It may be noted that
increased production of fine fruit has a
tendency to increase tthe consumption
of fruit. Dealers tell us that there Is
seldom a surplus of products of high
quality.
