When a man goes into the -4 J poultry business /i avice on a commercial basis, he seeks the most profitable A breed as a starter. 1 ' Therefore. after looking over the // Jz , market conditions I fit in your vicinity, if It Is found there o /, is practically an ltK\' unlimited market for the very best quality of white- llnrtnr shelled’table eggs. as well as foi lightweight broilers of a good quality of meat, the one breed that would ful fill all these requirements and have other advantages besides is the Single t'omb White Leghorns. That Single t'omb White Leghorn* are premier layers is acknowledged; in fact, the laying qualities of the other breeds are generally reckqped by using the Leghorns as the standard high wa ter mark. There Is a mistaken Idea that Leghorn-- lay a small egg as (Njn patf-d with other breeds. While a few stray flocks of poorly developed Leg horns may not lay a large egg. with propter breeding and ptroper feeding. Leghorns lay as large an egg as any of the heavier breeds. It is no uncommon thing to get a dozen eggs weighing 25 1-2 to 26 1-2 ounces, and all the eggs should average at least 24 ounces to the dozen. Single Comb White Leghorns are "hustlers” from the time they leave the shell, and because of this activity are comparatively easy to raise as chicks. There is very little danger of Leghorn chicks getting leg weakness from lack of exercise, as they continually keep “on the go” the whole day long. This not only keeps their digestive organs in good- shape, but enables one to hatch them earlier in the season without dan ger of their becoming chilled. Because of the rapidity of their feathering out. Leghorns can also be hatched quite late and will make sufficient growth of feathers to keep them from chilling in the fall and early winter, and these late hatched chicks will begin to lay in the spring and continue to lay heavily al! through the summer?ind even after the older birds have started to moult.
