Advice
From
the
Pou /fry
Doctor
Capons have al
ways been a
source of interest
I and profit to the
I average poultry
I keeper. Ant one
I making capons is
1 making mon e y.
This Is true be
es ;; r- a capon will
brine almon'
twice as much on
t;;e open market
for eating pur
poses as any oth
er kind of fowl.
A few years ago
capons w ere
scarcely ever heard of. except In the
East. This is all changed now. Now
wholesale produce houses all over the
South are striving to get capons.
New inventions, modern methods and
the perfection of automatic removers
and human’- spreaders have made all
this possible.
It Is not hard »o nrik, a capon. Any
one can do it. No expensive tools are
required The self working type of tools
now on the market are the best. With
the’o Instruments all tha' 1s required
Is to push hack a slide, press a spring
and the rest of the work Is performed
automatically very much In the same
manner as a binder ties and throws
out a bundle of wheat.
< >f course, it is understood that some
preparation Is necessary. The bird must
be of the right stage of development
and In th” right < ondition. No set rules
an be elven to thr proper size or age,
as individual birds varv in different
flocks. A little practice will show when
'-,l’l are right Geneially speaking,
when the bird is about like a quail in
size or when It weighs one to one and a
half pounds is the right time. This
point Is soon determined. The way to
learn is to work on a dead bird or two
- one that you have just killed to eat
After one has practiced a few times In
this way he will become accustomed to
using ’he too1<: then, when he has the
parts to bo removed fixed In his mind,
the rest is easy.
Until after the capon Is six months
old there will not be rnir h difference
observed between the capon and the
young cockerel. After that period is
passed the inpon will "heavy down,”
taking on flesh verj rapidly By the
time he Is nine to twelve months old
he should weigh ten to twelve pounds,
or one-third more than his brother
cockerel of the same age.
At this time the capon will bring
from 29 to 30 cents per pound, live
weight, depending on market condi
tions. The rooster of the same age
which has cost the same to raise will
bring at the same time six to seven
cents per pound, and. ns he weighs
one-third less, thr, difference In net
ret'irns Is obvious
