He r> j knew a great deal ] J QfI LtW about eggs, but the fact that 3.500,000 should Ilnrtnr arrive in one day started him off on a wild spree of figures. He took the figures home with him, dreamed over them for nights and. after he had found , himself smothered under a blanket-om elet large enough to cover .Manhattan island, he took the subject of eggs se riously. "I uns a bit surprised when I found that New York city had received a shipment of 3,500,000 eggs In one day.” explained the unfortunate commission merchant. "I wanted to know how many eggs we used in a year, and I ■ al< iilated that we handle In this city 1,274,000,000 every year. This yearly ipplt would make a .‘•ingle egg about is high as the Metropolitan tower. I secured official reports, from which I learned that the hens in this country lay 15,523.949,196 eggs every year. ’Nothing dangerous about this until I found they averaged about two inches long. If I should take those flft<g‘n billion and five hundred-odd million eggs and lay them end to end how long a line, would they make? That got me lo thinking, and It was only a /natter of ■minting to find that all the eggs laid In the United States, If placed end to end, would reach 4,823 miles. Why, that would make a line four times from New York city to Jacksoville, Fla. —a reg ular hoardwalk of eggs. ’I took the miles of eggs home with iii' 1 and went to sleep on the liquid amount all these eggs would make. I had a hard time of it and was not sat i-liod until I found it took eight eggs to make a pint, or 64 eggs to a gallon. How many gallons would those eggs make? Tho answer came—24.265,176 gallons of eggs. It was easy enough to learn that a good hen will average 200 eggs a. year, ■o It would require 77.619,745 hens to ay the 15,523,949.196 eggs This is un derestimating. but let it go at that. An average hen weighs about five pounds, so she must lay five times her weight in one year In eggs. If all the lu es in the United Rtates were one ereat hen and that hen were to lay i" • l . as large,as all the eggs laid in ■•ne , mil together, she would weigh 388.098,725 pounds. I was mad all the wax through madder than a wet hen — when she got on my cheat one night nd I had a hard time getting her off, and did not until I woke up and found the pillow clutched in my arms "But the ben wasn't In It with my roam of the next night, when 1 dis covered that that egg would weigh 1,949.493,623 pounds. Did you ever know of a hen laying an egg five times her own weight? I never did, and when I found that egg rolling down tho side of n mountain and I could not get out of the way—well, I woke up In time to . scape being crushed by an egg shell.” R. I. Red».
