be the models Wilmer L. Moore, presi

made addresses urging the steps.

a leading business man of this city,
Tom Hopper, cashier o's a Calhoun
bank, and Dolph Bray, prominent in
Calhoun business circles, were taken
off th. W< stern and Atlantic train here
last night and securely handcuffed to
prevent their escape. They were then
dragged by a party of determined men
to Hamilton stteet, where they were
chained to one of the posts of the White
Way.
It was, however, merely an Elk ini

all the more conspicuous by being

SELF-DEFENSE PLEA OF
ARMUCHEE MAN’S SLAYER
Rome. GA., July 19. Claiming
Charles Williams advanced upon him
with an ax. Ed Gibsor who shot and
killed Williams at his home near Ar
muchce, was brought to this city
and lodged in Jail. Williams’ wife and
’ two sons were the only witnesses to
the tragedy. They bear out the state
ment of self-defense. The killing was
the outgrowth of trouble between Wil
liams and Charles Gibson. The latter is
in jail, having been accused by Wil
liams of being too intimate with Mrs.
Williams.

TIME IS WASTED
UN LOCAL BILLS
Senator Harris offered a resolution
in the Georgia * senate today with a
view to saving the time of future legis
latures now wasted in taking up and
passing local bills. ’ He believes that
too much of the time of the assembly
spent on authorizing stepping stones
in Possum Creek and creating consta
bles to: militia districts, and warns
more time for real legislation.
His resolution provides that a joint
committee, three members from the
senate and three from the house, be
appointed to obtain information from
Other states as to their methods nf
handling local bills. Then, at the next
session of the Geotgia assembly, some
plan may be adopted io pass purely lo
cal measures without taking three
fourths of the legislature’s time.

TWO MEN, TRAPPED IN
BURNING GARAGE, HAVE
VERY NARROW ESCAPE
AUGUSTA, GA.. July 19.—Two prom
inent farmer, of Richmond county came
very near meeting death by cremation
last night when the garage, automobile,
barns and stables of M. Rhodes were
burned. .Mr. Rhodes lives six miles
from the city on the Washington road.
Accompanied by his wife. an<| children
and his wife’s uncle. Louts Atkins, he
went for an auto ride, returning after
nightfall.
Mrs. Rhodes and the children were
left at the residence and Messrs. Rhodes
and Atkins drove the automobile into
the garage. The place had only one
door and as soon as the automobile got
inside the wind blew the door shut, up
setting a keroaene lamp, which Ignited
everything around it. The two men
were trapped, the only means of escape
being through the flames. They finally
got out, although both were badly
bu-ned.
Fifteen horses and mules and a num
ber of hogs were, saved, but several
hundred bushels of coin and oats were
consumed. A female hound dog with
a half dozen puppies died with her off
spring rather than leave them. The
puppies w ere too small to walk.

lande, aged 28, and single. Is dying at
Hamot hospital with five bullet holes in
his body, and Mrs. Lucretia Corgiala.
aged 25. mother of three small children,
is locked up at police headquarters
charged with the shooting. The police
say the woman rushed into the street
carrying her six-months-old baby in
her arms just before 7 o'clock this
morning and shot Brliande while he
was on his way to work. She claims
Beilande has been bothering her. He
was a frequent caller at the Corgiala
home.
THREE RUN FOR HOUSE IN HALL.
GAINESVILLE. GA.. July 19 —Three
candidates are in the race in Hall coun
ty for the legislature—l. F. Duncan, a
mer of Ulinchem district. Ernest Pal
tnour. a merchant, and J. O. Adams, one
of the present members from Hall. Two
are to be elected.
