the work came last night at the din
ner for the members at Taft hall.
A convention and publicity bureau,
to book meetings of the larger com
mercial organizations of the country
for the city and to arrange for enlarged
publicity work, will be established, as
will be a bureau of municipal re
search, if the plans of the commerce
Chamber leaders are carried out. Chi

ing the plans already in practice, will
be the models. Wilmer L. Moore, presi
dent of the chamber of Commerce, and
Frederic J. Paxon, former president,
mafieeaddresses urging the steps.
"The work of the Chamber of Com
merce is not what I desire. Our pres

at once.” said Mr. Moore. He then
gave, in a concise way. the work being
carried out by progressive Northern
cities.
"We need a bureau of municipal re
search badly,” said Mr. Paxon. "Not
that the shortcomings of Atlanta may
be held up to be viewed by the world,
but that we may find a remedy for the
•this which exist here, as they do in
all cities, until they are remedied."

WAS REARED IN OLD
MILWAUKEE. YET HE
NEVER DRANK BEER
Here's another extraordinary story
from The Bonita Theater. On the bill
this week, along with several other
good acts, are the Lester Bros., a high
class acrobatic team hailing from Mil
waukee. and, although a certain bev
erage has made the town famous, Wil
liam Lester, the heavy man of the
team, says he never tasted beer or
whisky tn his life. Needless to say, if
old P T. Barnum were alive William
would be adorning a sideshow. Nev
ertheless, this act is great, and well
worth the price of admission alone.

INITIATION IN LODGE
DALTON. GA., July 19.—J. S. Hall,
a leading business man of this city;
Tom Hopper, cashier of a Calhoun
bank, and Dolph Bray, prominent in
Calhoun business circles, were taken
off the Western and Atlantic train here
last night and securely handcuffed to
prevent their escape. They were then
dragged by a party of determined men
to Hamilton street, where they were
chained to one of the posts of the White
Way.
It was, however, merely an Elk ini
tiation. and the novitiates were made
all the more conspicuous by being
forced to don ‘nighties," in which "in
formal" garb they were left tied to the
post for the passersby to see. After
the initiation, an Informal reception
was tendered the new members by Dal
ton lodge No. 1247, B. P. O, E.

Charles Williams advanced upon him
with an ax, Ed Gibson, who shot and
killed Williams at his home near Ar

two sons were the only witnesses to
the tragedy. They bear out the state

the outgrowth of trouble between Wil
liams and Charles Gibson. The latter is
in jail, having been accused by WIL
Hams of being too intimate with Mrs.
Williams.

TIME 15 WASTED
ON LOCAL BILLS
Senator Harris offered a resolution
in the Georgia senate today with a
view to saving the time of future legis
latures now wasted in taking up and
passing local bills. He believes that
too much of the time of the assembly Is
spent on authorizing stepping stones
in Possum Creek and creating consta
bles for militia districts, and wants
more time for real legislation.
His resolution provides that a joint
committee, three members from the
senate and three from the house, be
appointed to obtain information from
other states as to their methods of
handling local bills. Then, at the next
session of the Georgia assembly, some
plan may be adopted to pass purely lo
cal measures without taking three
fourths of the legislature's time.

TWO MEN, TRAPPED IN
BURNING GARAGE, HAVE
VERY NARROW ESCAPE
AUGUSTA, GA.. July 19.—Two prom
inent farmers of Richmond county came
very near meeting death by cremation
last night when the garage, automobile,
barns and stables of C. M. Rhodes were
burned. Mr. Rhodes lives six miles
from the city on the Washington road.
Accompanied by his wife and children
and his wife's uncle, Louis Atkins, he
went for an auto ride, returning after
nightfall.
Mrs. Rhodes and the children were
left at the residence and Messrs. Rhodes
and Atkins drove the automobile into
the garage. The place had only one
door and as soon as the automobile got
inside the wind blew the door shut, up
setting a kerosene lamp, which ignited
everything around it. The two men
were trapped, the only means of escape
being through the flames. They finally
get out, although both were badly
burned.
Fifteen horses and mules and a num.
her of hogs were saved, but several
hundred bushels of corn and oats were
consumed. A female hound dog with
a half dozen puppies died with her off
spring rather than leave them. The
puppies were too small to walk.
