STEARNS COMPANY
CELEBRATES BIRTH
OF SILENT KNIGHT
At Cleveland last week, at the fac
tory of the F. B. Stearns Company,
manufacturers of Stearns-Knight cars,
was held one of the most enthusiastic
conventions of Stearns branch man
agers, traveling representatives and
dealers In the history' of the company.
Incidentally, the meeting marked the
first anniversary of the birth of the
Stearns-Knight car, for It was Just a
year ago that the pioneer Cleveland
firm adopted the sleeve valve engine
to the total exclusion of the poppet
valve.
President Frank R. Stearns showed
by the sales records that the business
of the'past year was practically double
what it was before taking up the sleeve
valve motor. Judging by the large or
ders placed by* dealers at the conven
tion, the business during the coming
season will be far In advance of the
year just closed.
Stearns distributors from the At
lantic to the Pacific, and from the
Canadian line to the Gulf states, w< r
present during the week of the conven
tion. The Pacific coast was strongly
represented, while Texas and the other
Southern states sent more men than
ever before.
The new Stearns-Knight models cre
ated a great stir, for. as one promi
nent Eastern distributor declared,
"they are some of the classiest models
ever turned out in this country ” An
nouncement was made that all models
would be finished in nickel plate and
black enamel, thus further strengthen
ing the growing tendency toward this
finish among purchasers of high-gnu:•
cars.
The greatest feature of the conven
lion was the banquet tendered the di
trlbutors by President Frank B. Stea'”,.-
at the Cleveland Automobile Count;
club. When Mr Stearns an.se to in
troduce the first speaker of the evenin
he was given a tremendous ovation i
because of his wonderfully sucres- f
introduction of the Knight motor ■
this country against tremendous opi
sitfon, he was hailed as "the great,
automobile manufacturer in Amerie.
Before the convention adjourned ■'
ders were placed by the dealers t.
more cars than ever before in one we,
in the history of the Stearns compau
despite the fact that the price of n
car has been raised. The past
months have seen a strong drift tow.,
the sleeve valve motor, and liefer,
year is over It appears certain that
unparalleled success of the Stoat
Knight car last season will be
than doubled in the coming tv
months.

The often as.ked question at the Oak

"How do you get the cars iiao the I

Due to the narrowness of the doors, j
it is Impossible to get the cars into the i

Master Gabriel, the diminutive actor
us "Buster Brown” and “Little Nemo”
fame atjd starring at the Forsyth this
week, is quite an automobile enthusiast.
He was the guest of T. J. Bettes, the
Atlanta Hupmobile agent, the other
day for a spin new model Hupmo
bll.i roadster and surprised everyone by
driving the car himself. Gabriel is
somewhat of a linguist, speaking four
different tongues, but he certainly ex
cels in motor talk.
"Can I drive?” says the little fel
low. “Well, you just watch me crank
this boat and speed her up as fast as
the cops will stand for.” Then as he
took charge of the wheel he resumed
this off-stage monologue. “Say, you
ought to come up to my farm, and
I'll show you some real driving about
the roads and the city streets, if you
say so. I like this little ear, though—
just suits ine. I've got a big machine
up home, and I am somewhat attached
to it, but I think I'll buy one of these
Hupps. What are we making now?
Fifty-five? Well, that's fast enough.
Some scenery over there,” and so on
and on.
Another supreme court, this time in
the Keystone state, has decided that
townships, municipalities, counties or
states maintaining water bars in pub
lic highways are responsible for dam
ages to automobilists or their cars,
caused by contact with these unneces
sary obstructions.
That there are plenty of automo
biles, but no good roads in this coun
try to run them on, attesting that the
art of road building in America has not
kept pace with the motor car indus
try, is the opinion expressed by Lord
Montagu, of Beaulieq, editor of the
English motbring journal, "The Car.”
A campaign is now being waged by
the Touring Club of America to com
bine motorists in Pennsylvania in a
petition to the legislature of that state
for an appropriation sufficient to co
operate with the state of New Jersey
in the pur chase of all toll bridges over
the Delaware river.
More than 100 farmers and ranchers
of Texas will participate next week in
